It is light and easy to work with, fairly inexpensive, and readily available from local farms and garden centers.<\/p>\n<p>It helps regulate moisture and temperature, reduces necessary weeding, and builds healthy soil. yourself watering much less often \u2013 think once a week, rather than every day or two.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, water will filter more slowly into the ground, lessening the impacts of flooding plants cooler during hot summers and warmer during cold weather. This results in healthier plants and a longer growing season.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Less-Time-Weeding\">Less Time Weeding<\/h3>\n<p>While I have yet to see any organic mulch that is completely weed free, straw can come pretty close.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This is because it typically comes from crops that have previously had the seed heads harvested for grain. It is advantageous to the grower to remove as many of the seed heads as possible before the stalks are dried and baled.<\/p>\n<p>When thickly applied, it can also cut down on weeding significantly by blocking the sun from reaching the soil, thus preventing weed seeds from germinating, and killing those seedlings that do manage to sprout.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Protect-and-Build-Soil\">Protect and Build Soil<\/h3>\n<p>Leaving the soil bare can harm those important microorganisms and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/disease-and-pests\/beneficial-insects\/\">beneficial insects<\/a><\/strong> that make it a healthy, nutrient-rich environment for plants to grow.<\/p>\n<p>Think about it: When you go outside, you <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/beginners\/sun-protection-guide\/\">wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes<\/a><\/strong> from the sun. We can easily provide the same benefit to our gardens by mulching.<\/p>\n<p>Bare earth also means more erosion and nutrient leaching. When soil is unprotected, rain runs off quickly, carrying important nutrients with it. It is often made from a combination of plants, and it is rarely cut before at least some of it has gone to seed.<\/p>\n<p>In simple terms, hay is much more likely to contain weeds and invasive plants. Fortunately, most of these have easy fixes.<\/p>\n<p>This warm, fluffy, and soft material can be an attractive home for rodents, which is something to keep in mind especially if you tend to have issues with these pests. While it certainly adds some nutrients to the soil as it breaks down, it isn\u2019t actually an amazing source of nitrogen for the garden.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>This just means it is important to have sufficient nitrogen in your soil to avoid a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/composting\/plant-nutrients\/\">nutrient imbalance<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One easy way to do this is to spread a layer of nitrogen-rich material around the bed prior to laying down straw. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/composting\/basics-composting\/\">Compost<\/a><\/strong>, aged manure, or fresh grass clippings are all great sources of nitrogen.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Find-a-Source-You-Can-Trust\">Find a Source You Can Trust<\/h2>\n<p>Straw is readily available from local farmers and garden supply stores.<\/p>\n<p>It comes in bales of various sizes, often somewhere around a few feet long by a foot or two wide and high. Bales are made up of tightly packed layers of straw.
