{"id":3302,"date":"2025-05-20T20:41:24","date_gmt":"2025-05-21T03:41:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wrwofficial.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/20\/building-a-referral-network-6-mistakes-to-avoid\/"},"modified":"2025-05-20T20:41:26","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T03:41:26","slug":"building-a-referral-network-6-mistakes-to-avoid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wrwofficial.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/20\/building-a-referral-network-6-mistakes-to-avoid\/","title":{"rendered":"Building a Referral Network: 6 Mistakes to Avoid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>Everyone needs a team.<\/h2>\n<p>As a health coach, you can become an expert in multiple areas: nutrition, behavior change psychology, fitness and athletic performance, stress management and recovery, and more.<\/p>\n<p>However, no matter how many certifications you earn, you\u2019ll invariably encounter clients with progress-blocking problems you don\u2019t have the skills, training, expertise, or legal right to solve.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing\u2026<\/p>\n<p><em>You <\/em>may not be an expert at fixing marriages, treating GERD, or counseling someone with an eating disorder, but someone else is.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s where a healthy referral network comes in.<\/p>\n<p>By connecting your client with such a person, you get to stay within your scope of practice, give welcome business to respected colleagues, <em>and<\/em> help your client solve their problem.<\/p>\n<p>(Total. Supercoach. Move.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.precisionnutrition.com\/nutrition-certification\">All of our certification programs<\/a> include sections devoted to teaching coaches how to build robust referral networks of professionals skilled at solving common client problems.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll discuss how to do that\u2014by exploring the top <em>mistakes<\/em> we see coaches make. Avoid them, and you\u2019ll be able to refer out with confidence.<\/p>\n<h2>First, what\u2019s a referral network?<\/h2>\n<p>A referral network is a list of supplementary professionals, businesses, and resources that benefit clients.<\/p>\n<p>Your network might include local or virtual:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pn-list__spaced\">\n<li>Medical doctors, psychologists, registered dietitians, and other professionals with the training and credentials to help clients with problems outside of your scope of practice. (For an in-depth refresher, see our <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.precisionnutrition.com\/2021\/11\/Scope-of-Practice-Worksheet_r72.pdf\">Scope of Practice worksheet<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>Fellow health coaches and personal trainers with deep knowledge in an area outside your experience. (For example, maybe a client is interested in learning yoga, but you haven\u2019t the faintest idea of how to salute the sun.)<\/li>\n<li>Workshops, fitness groups, webinars, food services, and other resources that support clients during their behavior change journey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To confidently refer clients to skilled practitioners with excellent reputations, you\u2019ll want to do some legwork. That brings us to the top mistakes to avoid.<\/p>\n<h2>Mistake #1: You build your network <em>before<\/em> launching your business.<\/h2>\n<p>For recently certified health coaches, the task \u201ccreate a referral network\u201d can double as a procrastination tool, says PN\u2019s Director of Community Engagement Kate Solovieva.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than take on clients, these coaches search for an increasing number of professionals, valiantly trying to be prepared for every potential referral situation. Yet, as much as they continue to work on it, their list is never \u201ccomplete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t be prepared for everything,\u201d says Solovieva.<\/p>\n<h3>The solution<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Take on clients as soon as you\u2019re certified. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes! That might sound scary, but the best way to figure out your \u201cgaps\u201d is to begin your practice, and see where your clients actually need help beyond what you can offer.<\/p>\n<p>Add folks to your referral network over time as you:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pn-list__spaced\">\n<li>Connect with professionals on LinkedIn and other virtual networking sites<\/li>\n<li>Lean into peer networks (such as the Precision Nutrition Facebook communities)<\/li>\n<li>Mingle with members of your local Chamber of Commerce<\/li>\n<li>Chat with family, friends, and clients about professionals and resources they love<\/li>\n<li>Attend health conventions and other local events where a variety of health professionals tend to congregate<\/li>\n<li>Search for (and try out!) providers based on your own health needs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"callout_box\">\n<h2>Who belongs in your referral network?<\/h2>\n<p>Use the following resource list as inspiration.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"45%\"><strong>Resource<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"20%\"><strong>Name<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"20%\"><strong>Website<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"15%\"><strong>Contact information<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Acupuncturist<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Chiropractor<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Cooking class<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Cycling, hiking, walking, or running club<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Exercise physiologist<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Coach who specializes in plant-based diets \/ pre- or post-natal fitness \/ other coaching niche you don\u2019t cater to<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Marriage \/ family counselor<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Massage therapist<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Meal delivery service<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Mental health professional<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Orthopedist<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Pelvic floor therapist<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Primary care physician<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Physiotherapist<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Registered dietitian<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Stress management class<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Other<\/td>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<td\/>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Mistake #2: You assume your referral list will cover <em>all <\/em>client needs.<\/h2>\n<p>As we mentioned above, you\u2019ll never be able to anticipate every referral or client question ahead of time\u2014and that\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially true if you coach virtually with clients worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>(You might know three fantastic massage therapists where you live in Toronto, Canada, but that knowledge won\u2019t help if your client is based in Wellington, New Zealand.)<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, some professionals or resources might work for some clients, but not others.<\/p>\n<p>(You might, for example, know of several meal delivery options, yet none are suitable for that plant-based client who\u2019s on a strict gluten-free diet.)<\/p>\n<h3>The solution<\/h3>\n<p>Learn how to help clients find the professionals and resources they need.<\/p>\n<p>You might:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pn-list__spaced\">\n<li>Ask clients to describe their preferences. (Do they prefer working with a specific gender? Do they want to meet in person or online? Do they like the eagerness and creativity of a newer professional, or the \u201cI\u2019ve seen it all\u201d sageness of a more seasoned pro?)<\/li>\n<li>Devote a coaching session to searching online for potential professionals and services together.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage clients to contact three practitioners, ask questions, and use what they learn to pick a winner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Mistake #3: You let social awkwardness derail networking opportunities.<\/h2>\n<p>Reaching out to a stranger requires some bravery. You have to put yourself out there, explain who you are and what your motives are, and risk being ignored or turned down.<\/p>\n<p>This is where many coaches get stuck, says Toni Bauer, PN\u2019s Director of Coaching and Education Operations.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, many coaches may put off the conversation.<\/p>\n<h3>The solution<\/h3>\n<p>Turn networking into a challenge. Coach Solovieva calls it \u201cOperation 100.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pn-list__spaced\">\n<li>Set a goal to contact 100 professionals over 12 months.<\/li>\n<li>Work toward your goal every week for about 20 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Follow up with each non-responder once or twice.<\/li>\n<li>Instead of expecting a \u201cyes\u201d from every person you approach, understand that only about 10 percent of people will get back to you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To ease yourself into the challenge, draft your elevator pitch, suggests Bauer.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t overthink this. Your pitch doesn\u2019t have to be a multi-page persuasive essay. Nor does it have to contain magical talking points. Just be yourself.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout_box\">\n<h2>The elevator pitch: How to introduce yourself to a potential referral<\/h2>\n<p>As you work on your elevator pitch, use the examples below for inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a health coach who works with corporate executives. However, some of my clients would benefit from someone with your expertise. I would like to recommend you to my clients as those needs arise. Are you open to that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Or:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a health coach who works with athletes. Occasionally, my clients need guidance that I can\u2019t always provide. I admire the work you\u2019re doing, and I\u2019d love to be able to refer people to you. If you\u2019re open to that, could we have a quick 15- or 20-minute meeting to discuss what that arrangement would look like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Or simply:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a health coach and I\u2019m building a referral list of practitioners. I would love to refer clients to you. Are you taking new patients right now?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Mistake #4: You use dated persuasion tactics.<\/h2>\n<p>If you use LinkedIn, then you\u2019ve likely been on the receiving end of old-school cold sales tactics. We\u2019re talking direct messages from strangers who clearly haven\u2019t read anything on your profile and know nothing about you.<\/p>\n<p>These spammy messages are as welcome as a stranger who sidles up to you at a bar and says, \u201cSo, wanna come back to my place?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not here to discourage you from using cold outreach. It has a place. However, to increase your response rate, we\u2019d like to introduce you to a rarely used technique.<\/p>\n<h3>The solution<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Get to know people before making an online ask<\/strong>, suggests Coach Solovieva.<\/p>\n<p>Follow them, read their content, download and consume their free resources, comment on their posts, congratulate them on career wins, and become a part of their online life.<\/p>\n<p>Do <em>that,<\/em> and people will remember you. More of them will respond to your messages, too. Plus, the intel you gather by forming a relationship will help you avoid\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>Mistake #5: You don\u2019t personally vet referrals.<\/h2>\n<p>How do you ensure you refer clients to compassionate professionals who truly know what they\u2019re doing?<\/p>\n<p><strong>It involves more than checking someone\u2019s website or social media profile. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you only look at someone\u2019s website or social media posts, \u201cYou\u2019re just vetting their confidence and copywriting skills,\u201d says Solovieva. \u201cIf we\u2019re fortunate, confidence and copywriting go hand in hand with ability, but not always.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The solution<\/h3>\n<p>Try out their services. Take someone\u2019s yoga or Zumba class. Book a massage. Ask a medical professional to look at your creaky knee.<\/p>\n<p>That way, you can see the professional in action.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re thinking, \u2018I don\u2019t need some of the services my clients need!\u2019 you\u2019ve got a couple of options:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pn-list__spaced\">\n<li>Offer to pay a professional to meet with you for 30 to 60 minutes so you can ask some questions, get a sense of their treatment philosophy, and chat about referring clients to them.<\/li>\n<li>Interact with people in local social networking communities like NextDoor.com. Ask group members if they\u2019ve seen a practitioner and, if so, whether they\u2019d recommend the person.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Mistake #6: You sell clients too hard on your referrals.<\/h2>\n<p>When you recommend a professional you\u2019ve personally vetted, it\u2019s natural to want your client to take action.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite your hard work, some clients just won\u2019t make an appointment with the professional in question\u2014and that\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet your clients be adults,\u201d says Coach Bauer.<\/p>\n<p>Clients have their reasons. Maybe their insurance won\u2019t cover the service in question. Or, maybe they decided to see someone else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not your responsibility for the relationships to be perfect or to flourish,\u201c says Bauer.<\/p>\n<h2>A cycle of support<\/h2>\n<p>Some coaches fear referrals because they see them as \u201cgiving business away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In reality, however, when you refer clients to solid pros, your clients simply feel like you have their back.
