Hi GPODers!<\/p>\n

Garden design incorporates many elements that lend to a space\u2019s interest and style. For example, diverse textures and forms are both essential for dazzling displays. However, during the peak of the growing season, no matter what kinds of plants you grow, we\u2019re all looking to enjoy more color! One gardener savoring the height of color in her landscape is Cindy from Rochester, New York. Cindy has shared her lush and lively garden twice in the past (Cindy\u2019s Garden in New York<\/a> and A Garden Through the Seasons<\/a>), but a lot has evolved since then, and there are plenty of new plants and combinations to enjoy.<\/p>\n

I have been gardening in this spot in Rochester, New York, for 13 years. I love orange, chartreuse, and purple. This is the time when the colors are bold and working together to create an explosion before going to seed. We converted a previous owner\u2019s 30-foot veg garden into a pollinator buffet. There is a vast mix including goat\u2019s beard<\/em> (<\/em>Aruncus<\/a> dioicus, Zones 4\u20138)<\/em>, digitalis<\/a>, poppies, echinacea<\/a>, phlox<\/a>, black cohosh<\/a> <\/em>(Actaea racemosa, Zones 3\u20138)\u2014a bee magnet, fennel, campanula<\/a>, betony, and for scent\u2014buddleia and Henry\u2019s sweetspire<\/em> (<\/em>Itea<\/a> virginica \u2018Henry\u2019s Garnet\u2019, Zones 5\u20139)<\/em>. To break up the lawn space, we added an island of shrubs: male ilex<\/a>, viburnum<\/a>, fothergilla<\/a>, mixed with obedient<\/a><\/em> (<\/em>Physostegia<\/a> virginiana, Zones 2\u20138)<\/em>, Fireworks solidago<\/em> (<\/em>Solidago<\/a> rugosa \u2018Fireworks\u2019<\/em>, Zones 4\u20138)<\/em>, and others. <\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a>There is a small water feature that serves as a toad nursery and watering hole. The deer for the most part stay away, due to sight-blocking foliage along the fence line, spray, winter fencing, and the fearless canine!<\/em><\/p>\n

\"garden<\/a>Cindy\u2019s gardens surround her back deck, which offers ample seating for all her guests to enjoy the riot of color that erupts from every corner of her landscape.<\/p>\n

\"pink<\/a>A bright white Kousa dogwood (Cornus<\/a> kousa, <\/em>Zones 5\u20138) is the perfect backdrop for this vignette of goat\u2019s beard, \u2018Dark Towers\u2019 penstemon (Penstemon<\/em><\/a> \u2018Dark Towers\u2019, <\/em>Zones 5\u20138), and lofty foxgloves.<\/p>\n

\"bright<\/a>What a treat to find a plant that features two of your favorite garden colors! Burning Hearts false sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides<\/em> var. scabra<\/em> \u2018Burning Hearts\u2019, <\/em>Zones 3\u20139) doesn\u2019t need perfectly planned pairings because the combination of bright orange and yellow flowers with dark green and purple foliage is enticing all by itself.<\/p>\n

\"group<\/a>This grouping of containers on Cindy\u2019s deck is a delicious mix of citrusy colors, and a large planting of Candy Corn spirea (Spiraea<\/a> japonica<\/em> \u2018NCSX1\u2019, <\/em>Zones 4\u20138) is the perfect complement in the background.<\/p>\n

\"garden<\/a>A small path leading you to the back half of Cindy\u2019s gardens takes you through another chorus of delightful plant color. A large oakleaf hydrangea<\/a> (Hydrangea quercifolia, <\/em>Zones 5\u20139) anchors the design on the left side.<\/p>\n

\"shade<\/a>In a shadier area of her garden, Cindy relies on foliage to keep the interest and color going. This corner features mostly greenery, but a small purple Japanese maple allows her to still incorporate her favorite color theme.<\/p>\n

\"dog<\/a>And here is Cindy\u2019s fearless canine! Some downtime sunbathing on the deck is well earned after all that hard work protecting the garden.<\/p>\n

\"tall<\/a>Where color is a little more subdued, like this mostly white planting of Goat\u2019s beard with black cohosh and Shasta daisies (Leucanthemum<\/em><\/a> x superbum, <\/em>Zones 4\u20139), Cindy smartly turns to texture to provide plenty of interest and contrast.<\/p>\n

\"container<\/a>One final container on her deck brings even more color to this entryway. A \u2018Tickled Pink\u2019 euphorbia (Euphorbia<\/em><\/a> \u2018Tickled Pink\u2019, <\/em>annual), Pegasus\u00ae<\/sup> begonia (Begonia<\/em><\/a> \u2018Pegasus\u2019, <\/em>Zones 9\u201311 or as an annual) and tiny fuchsia plant is the perfect marriage of\u00a0moody foliage and bright pink flowers.<\/p>\n
