Margaret Onken in St. Louis, Missouri, is a self-proclaimed \u201cwannabe amateur,\u201d but the vibrancy of her late-season beds and borders\u2014from the deepest pockets of shade to sections of intense, full sun\u2014show that her \u201camateur\u201d abilities have already created a garden that many would envy.<\/p>\n<p><em>I live in St. Louis, Missouri, with a small yard that provides both sun and shade. I wouldn\u2019t call myself an amateur gardener. I\u2019m a wannabe amateur! <\/em><em>At this time of year, St. Louis gardens start to look a little tired. The weather is very hot and very dry in August. <\/em><em>I have quite few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/plant\/bleeding-heart-dicentra-spectabilis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bleeding hearts<\/a><\/em>\u00a0<em>(<\/em>Dicentra spectabilis, <em>Zones 3\u20139)<\/em><em> and bluebells<\/em>\u00a0<em>that I transplanted this summer. Can\u2019t wait to see how things pop up in Spring \u201926! Look forward to sending more pictures then.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/10\/03164709\/GPOD-Onken-1-American-Jumpseed.jpg\"><\/a><em>I started a woodland garden two years ago in our backyard by clearing out almost a \u00bc acre of honeysuckle and weeds, keeping the walnut and sycamore trees, along with a few crabapples I found hiding in the scrub. I\u2019m still figuring out what a woodland garden should look like, how to meander through it, and wait for my bushes and trees to grow. In the meantime, I kept the wild American jumpseed<\/em>\u00a0<em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/caryopteris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caryopteris<\/a> incana, <em>Zones 5\u20139)\u2014<\/em><em>it\u2019s tall and, with its delicate white shoots, has a tranquil feel against the Canada Red chokecherry <\/em><em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/prunus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prunus<\/a> virginiana<em> \u2018Canada Red\u2019<\/em>, <em>Zones 3\u20138)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/10\/03164721\/GPOD-Onken-4-fallen-tree-in-garden.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-221648\" src=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/10\/03164721\/GPOD-Onken-4-fallen-tree-in-garden.jpg\" alt=\"fallen tree in garden\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/10\/03164721\/GPOD-Onken-4-fallen-tree-in-garden.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/10\/03164721\/GPOD-Onken-4-fallen-tree-in-garden-700x875.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/10\/03164721\/GPOD-Onken-4-fallen-tree-in-garden-768x960.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\"\/><\/a><em>I also kept a downed tree and stump. It\u2019s cool and serene in the shade with plenty of moss covering it. I like the structure for vegetables and herbs. The water hyacinth<\/em>\u00a0<em>(<\/em>Eichhornia crassipes, <em>annual)<\/em><em> and water lettuce<\/em>\u00a0<em>(<\/em>Pistia stratiotes, annual<em>)<\/em><em> love it!
