And now begins our excursion into the realm of the orchid cacti!<\/p>\n

1. Ackermannii<\/h2>\n

Our first selection is commonly known as \u201cred orchid cactus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although this species used to be classified in the Epiphyllum<\/em> genus, E. ackermannii<\/em> has since been reclassified to the closely related Disocactus <\/em>genus, and is now known botanically as D. ackermannii.<\/em><\/p>\n

Red orchid cactus blooms in the springtime, bearing scarlet red, funnel-shaped flowers that reach five inches across or more.<\/p>\n

These are delicately scented and last for a few days before fading.<\/p>\n

The stems of red orchid cactus reach seven inches to three feet long, and have prominent veins and undulating to toothed margins. These stems display upright growth before trailing down.<\/p>\n

In 2012, this species received the Royal Horticultural Society\u2019s Award of Garden Merit.<\/p>\n

2. American Sweetheart<\/h2>\n

\u2018American Sweetheart\u2019 is an epiphyllum hybrid with gorgeous pink and golden-pink blooms.<\/p>\n

Flowers are extra-large, reaching nine inches wide or more, and have a cup and saucer form, with pink inner petals, golden-pink outer petals, and cream colored stigma and stamens.<\/p>\n

\u2018American Sweetheart\u2019 has flat stems and grows well in a hanging basket.<\/p>\n

3. Anguliger<\/h2>\n

Commonly called \u201czigzag cactus\u201d or \u201cfishbone cactus,\u201d Disocactus anguliger<\/em> is another species that has been ousted from the Epiphyllum<\/em> genus.<\/p>\n

Also previously classified as Cereus mexicanus<\/em>, which is considered a synonym, fans of forest cacti will frequently see this species referred to as E. anguliger<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Its flat, wide stems are deeply lobed, making one think of the skeleton of a fish \u2013 or of rickrack ribbon, which gives rise to another common name, \u201cric rac cactus.\u201d<\/p>\n

This species bears medium-sized flowers that measure five to seven inches across.<\/p>\n

Inner petals are white to cream colored, broad and overlapping, surrounded by golden to golden brown, narrow outer petals. Stigma, stamens, and style are all white.<\/p>\n

These flowers bloom at night and are short lived, remaining open for 12 to 24 hours.<\/p>\n

D. anguliger<\/em> grows well in a hanging basket and has prolific foliage, which can grow several feet long.<\/p>\n

4. Anthonyanus<\/h2>\n

Our next selection is commonly called \u201cfishbone cactus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Are you getting a feeling of d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu?<\/p>\n

Glad to know you\u2019re paying attention \u2013 yes, that common name should sound very familiar! I suppose the world is big enough for two fishbone cacti, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

Along with bearing a remarkably close resemblance to the previous selection, this species (Selenicereus anthonyanus<\/em>)<\/em> shares additional common names with that other fishbone cactus \u2013 \u201cric rac cactus\u201d as well as \u201czigzag cactus.\u201d<\/p>\n

While S. anthonyanus<\/em> was never classified botanically as an Epiphyllum<\/em>, it is often confused with its lookalike and is frequently referred to as an epiphyllum.<\/p>\n

S. anthonyanus<\/em> has long, flat stems that are deeply lobed, with a fishbone shape. Compared to D. anguliger, <\/em>the lobes are sharper and less rounded \u2013 but only on more mature stems!<\/p>\n

Younger specimens of these two species can be extremely hard to distinguish from each other based on their foliage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
