Then we\u2019ll move on to nursery pots.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Stem Cuttings<\/h3>\n<p>The best time to take cuttings is during the growing season in spring or summer.<\/p>\n<p>To take a cutting from a stem, start at the growing tip and measure down about three inches.<\/p>\n<p>Use clean scissors to cut cleanly across the stem about an eighth of an inch below a pair of leaves.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" alt=\"A close up horizontal image of the variegated foliage of a watermelon pilea plant.\" class=\"wp-image-191974 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Variegated-Foliage-of-Aluminum-Plants.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Variegated-Foliage-of-Aluminum-Plants.jpg\" alt=\"A close up horizontal image of the variegated foliage of a watermelon pilea plant.\" class=\"wp-image-191974\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Snip off the lowest leaves so you\u2019re left with a length of bare stem at least two inches long, with the top leaves intact.<\/p>\n<p>Choose a four- to six-ounce container and sanitize it with a 10 percent bleach solution (one part bleach to nine parts water), then thoroughly rinse and dry it.<\/p>\n<p>Place the stem in the container and fill it with two inches of water.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Set the container in a location with bright indirect sunlight and a temperature between 60 and 75\u00b0F.<\/p>\n<p>Change the water every few days to keep it fresh.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>You\u2019ll see fragile white roots sprouting from the bottom of the stem in a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In another week or so, it\u2019s time to transplant the cutting to potting soil.<\/p>\n<p>Choose <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/containers\/plant-containers-pots-planters-material-best\/\">an attractive, well-draining container<\/a><\/strong> that can accommodate bushy dimensions of nine to 12 inches tall and six to nine inches wide.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" alt=\"A close up top-down view of a small aluminum plant growing in a pot set on a wooden surface.\" class=\"wp-image-191983 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Small-Watermelon-Pilea-Plant.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Small-Watermelon-Pilea-Plant.jpg\" alt=\"A close up top-down view of a small aluminum plant growing in a pot set on a wooden surface.\" class=\"wp-image-191983\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fill the pot three quarters full with your choice of potting medium and make a one-inch-deep hole.<\/p>\n<p>Gently insert the rooted stem into the hole and tamp the soil around it securely, then water well.<\/p>\n<p>If you wish to start your cutting in soil, you can dip the cut end in rooting hormone powder, then set the cutting one inch deep in a starter pot filled three quarters full of potting medium.<\/p>\n<p>Maintain even moisture. New growth is evidence of successful root formation. Set it so the plant is at the same depth in the new pot as it was in the old.<\/p>\n<p>Fill in with organically rich potting soil as needed. Stang, Wikimedia Commons, via <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0\/deed.en\">CC BY-SA<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, houseplants in rooms that are too hot and dry may succumb to pests like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/disease-and-pests\/aphids\/\">aphids<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/disease-and-pests\/control-mealybugs\/\">mealybugs<\/a><\/strong>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/disease-and-pests\/control-spider-mites\/\"><strong>spider mites<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Caught early, a firm dousing with the kitchen sprayer followed by a treatment with organic insecticidal neem oil should do the trick.<\/p>\n<p>Getting rid of these pests is a must, as they are carriers of plant diseases, and their sap-sucking can cause extensive foliar damage.<\/p>\n<p>When a pest infestation can\u2019t be controlled, as a last resort, you can cut all the stems to the crown and discard them in the trash.<\/p>\n<p>With a nourishing dose of liquid houseplant fertilizer and regular watering, the stems may regrow.<\/p>\n<p>The following diseases are common to <em>P. cadierei<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Anthracnose (<em>Colletotrichum<\/em>\u00a0spp.)<\/li>\n<li>Myrothecium Leaf Spot (<em>Myrothecium roridum<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Pythium Root Rot (<em>Pythium<\/em>\u00a0spp.)<\/li>\n<li>Rhizoctonia Aerial Blight (<em>Rhizoctonia solani<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Xanthomonas Leaf Spot (Xanthomonas campestris)<\/li>\n<li>Southern blight (<em>Sclerotium rolfsii<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most of these are caused by fungal pathogens or water molds (oomycetes).
