For Day 4 of the challenge, let\u2019s do a short and fun activity based around a concept called <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7812665\/\">cognitive reserve<\/a>.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!--]--><!--[2--><!----><\/p>\n<figure class=\"g-wrapper  svelte-19s2qxj\" style=\"--g-wrapper_hed-text-wrap:balance\"><!--[!--><!--]--> <!--[!--><!--]--> <!----> <!--[!--><!--]--><!----><\/figure>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\"><!--[--><!---->Decades of research show that people who have more <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3193875\/\">years of education<\/a>, more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurology.org\/doi\/10.1212\/WNL.0000000000209353\">cognitively demanding jobs<\/a> or more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa022252\">mentally stimulating hobbies<\/a> all tend to have a reduced risk of cognitive impairment as they get older.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!--]--><!--[--><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\"><!--[--><!---->Experts think this is partly thanks to cognitive reserve: Basically, the more brain power you\u2019ve built up over the years, the more you can stand to lose before you experience impairment. Researchers still don\u2019t agree on how to measure cognitive reserve, but one theory is that better connections between different brain regions corresponds with more cognitive reserve.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!--]--><!--[--><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\"><!--[--><!---->To build up these connections, you need to stimulate your brain, said Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at NYU Langone Health and the founder and chief medical officer of the telehealth platform Isaac Health. To do that, try an activity that is \u201cchallenging enough that it requires some effort but not so challenging that you don\u2019t want to do it anymore,\u201d he said.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!--]--><!--[3--><!--]--><!--[--><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\"><!--[--><!----><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/16\/well\/mind\/dementia-bilingual-language.html\">Speaking a second language<\/a> has been shown to be good for cognition, as has <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/gps.6061\">playing a musical instrument<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30025547\/\">visiting a museum<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5473779\/\">doing handicrafts<\/a> like knitting or quilting. Reading is considered a mentally stimulating hobby, and experts say you\u2019ll get an even bigger benefit if you join a book club to make it social. Listen to a podcast to learn something new, or, better yet, attend a lecture in person at a local college or community center, said Dr. Zaldy Tan, the director of the Memory and Healthy Aging Program at Cedars-Sinai. That adds a social component, plus the extra challenge of having to navigate your way there, he said.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!--]--><!--[--><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\"><!--[--><!---->A <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3025284\/\">few<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8408511\/\">studies<\/a> have found that playing board games like chess can be good for your brain; the same goes for doing <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3885259\/\">crossword puzzles<\/a>. It\u2019s possible that other types of puzzles, like those you find in brain teaser books or from New York Times Games, can also offer a cognitive benefit.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!--]--><!--[--><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\"><!--[--><!---->But there\u2019s a catch: To get the best brain workout, the activity should not only be challenging but also new. If you do \u201cWordle every day, it\u2019s like well, then you\u2019re very, very good at Wordle, and the Wordle part of your brain has grown to be fantastic,\u201d said Dr. Linda Selwa, a clinical professor of neurology at the University of Michigan Medical School. \u201cBut the rest of your mind might still need work.\u201d<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!--]--><!--[--><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\"><!--[--><!---->So play a game you\u2019re not used to playing, Dr. Selwa said. \u201cThe novelty seems to be what\u2019s driving brain remodeling and growth.\u201d<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!--]--><!--[--><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-19nwvmi\"><!--[--><!---->Today, we want you to push yourself out of your cognitive comfort zone.
