Happy Monday GPODers!<\/p>\n

We had a wonderful little excursion around the world last week, but the amazing \u201cOn the Road\u201d submissions haven\u2019t stopped, so we are starting this week with a few more outstanding garden destinations and the gorgeous plants that our contributors saw on their recent visits. Today we\u2019re heading to Chicago Botanic Garden<\/a> with\u00a0Cindy Strickland, who has shared bright blooms from her garden in the windy city (Cindy\u2019s Top Summer Blooms Northwest Chicago<\/a>) as well as from some of the fascinating gardens she has travelled to over the years (Sissinghurst Castle Garden in Late May<\/a>, Sydney, Australia<\/a>, and Smallhythe Place<\/a>). With this world-renowned garden institution in her backyard, she was able to plan a visit that coincided with the first flowers of the year.<\/p>\n

Hello, Cindy in Chicago here. Just wanted to share a few early bloomers I found at Chicago Botanic Garden<\/a> on March 8, 2026. I was mainly looking for the white and pendulous galanthus<\/a>\u2014also known as snowdrops. I enjoyed noting the details of the different markings on the flowers. A nodding flower that looks similar to<\/em> galanthus<\/em> is summer snowflake<\/em> (<\/em>Leucojum<\/a> aestivum, Zones 4\u20138), which blooms later than galanthus but is also in the Amaryllis family.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a>\u2018Flore Pleno\u2019<\/em> (<\/em>G. nivalis \u2018Flore Pleno\u2019<\/em>, Zones 3\u20137) is a \u201cdouble\u201d snowdrop\u2014the inner perianth segments are usually marked with green.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Galanthus<\/a>Giant snowdrop (<\/em>G. elwesii, Zones 4\u20137)<\/em>\u00a0is a larger a variety described as a good one for naturalizing and, like other galanthus, it likes to grow in well drained soil under deciduous trees that will provide some shade after blooming.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Galanthus<\/a>\u2018Sam Arnott\u2019<\/em> (<\/em>G. nivalis \u2018Sam Arnott\u2019<\/em>, Zones 3\u20137)<\/em> is a noticeably bigger variety with larger flowers.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Galanthus<\/a>\u2018Viridi-Apice\u2019 (<\/em>G. nivalis \u2018Viridi-apice\u2019<\/em>, Zones 3\u20137)<\/em> also known as the green-tip snowdrop is the only cultivar with a green spot near the tips of the outer whorl of tepals.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Eranthis<\/a>Winter aconite (<\/em>Eranthis hyemalis, Zones 3\u20137)<\/em> is also an early bloomer.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Winter<\/a>Winter aconite in a wide shot. Like galanthus, winter aconite prefers well-draining soil with organic material, medium moisture, and full sun to part shade.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Iris<\/a>\u2018Sunshine\u2019 reticulated iris<\/em> (<\/em>Iris<\/a> reticulata \u2018Sunshine\u2019<\/em>, Zones 3\u20137)\u2014according to the Chicago Botanic Garden website<\/a>, this cultivar is smaller than most reticulated iris and is a modern cross between the blue<\/em> sophenensis iris (<\/em>I. sophenensis, Zones 4\u20138)<\/em> and the yellow Danford iri<\/em>s (<\/em>I. danfordiae, Zones 5\u20139)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"Alexandrina<\/a>Alexandrina saucer magnolia<\/em> (<\/em>Magnolia<\/a> \u00d7 <\/em>soulangeana \u2018Alexandrina\u2019<\/em>, Zones 5\u20139)<\/em> is the large tree in the foreground with early flowers blooming below.<\/em><\/p>\n
