Ecstasy is a prime example.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->The party drug <strong>MDMA<\/strong> has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1985\/06\/01\/us\/us-will-ban-ecstasy-a-hallucinogenic-drug.html\">illegal since 1985<\/a>. A single oxygen atom changes the molecule to <strong>methylone<\/strong>, which provides an Ecstasy-like <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9981643\/\">euphoria<\/a>.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!----><\/p>\n<figure class=\"g-wrapper  svelte-usvsk3 g-needs-margin-block\" style=\"--g-wrapper_hed-text-wrap:balance\"><!--[!--><!--]--> <!--[!--><!--]--> <!----> <!--[!--><!--]--><!----><\/figure>\n<p><!----><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->The discovery of what this simple change could do has had a profound consequence. When methylone reached the U.S. market in 2010 the drug could be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/07\/17\/us\/17salts.html\">sold legally<\/a> in corner stores and smoke shops as \u201cbath salts.\u201d<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->But methylone wasn\u2019t the end of the story. Illicit chemists now use methylone\u2019s structure as a template for modern-day alchemy. New drug laws push them to invent new variants, which emerge in the illicit drug market with untested potencies and effects \u2014 a vicious cycle that has been impossible to contain.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!----><\/p>\n<figure class=\"g-wrapper g-custom-related-links svelte-usvsk3 g-needs-margin-block\" style=\"--g-wrapper_hed-text-wrap:balance\"><!--[!--><!--]--> <!--[!--><!--]--> <!----> <!--[!--><!--]--><!----><\/figure>\n<p><!----><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->These chemists are located in unregulated labs around the globe, from big enterprises in China and India that produce drugs and their precursor compounds in huge volumes, to single-person and small domestic operations that cut and package drugs for retail sale. Some of the most-used drugs, such as fentanyl, are mixed in Mexico and exported north.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"g-subhed  svelte-wg034b\"><!---->Waves of Bath Salts<!----><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->Methylone was an early example of a class of drugs known as <strong>synthetic cathinones<\/strong>, which continue to proliferate.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->Beginning in 2010, emergency rooms began seeing agitated patients who were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/07\/17\/us\/17salts.html\">violent, paranoid and psychotic<\/a> after ingesting synthetic cathinones sold as bath salts. Poison control centers received a few hundred calls about the drugs in 2010. The Drug Enforcement Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2019\/05\/01\/2019-08704\/schedules-of-controlled-substances-temporary-placement-of-n-ethylhexedrone--php-4-meap-mphp-pv8-and\">noted<\/a> in 2019 that \u201cas one synthetic cathinone is controlled, another unscheduled synthetic cathinone appears in the recreational drug market.\u201d<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->Examining the drug on a molecular level shows how illicit chemists try to increase potency and heighten the effect in a user\u2019s brain.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->As cathinone molecules become more potent, they also become more addictive. \u201cBecause they hijack the dopamine system in the brain \u2014 the salience and reward system in the brain \u2014 they\u2019re going to be extremely addictive,\u201d said Dr. Michael Baumann, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/irp.nida.nih.gov\/organization\/osd\/ddru\/\">Designer Drug Research Unit<\/a> of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. \u201cThere\u2019s a reason why chemists would design these.\u201d<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->Experts confirmed that the molecules described in this article are well known among illicit chemists, who have moved on to newer structures. \u201cThese are not rudimentary chemists,\u201d Dr. Baumann said. \u201cThey\u2019re actually ahead of us.\u201d<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"g-subhed  svelte-wg034b\"><!---->Nitazenes, the \u2018Frankenstein Opioids\u2019<!----><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->Another class of drugs has been following a similar pattern. When China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/01\/world\/asia\/china-bans-fentanyl-trump.html\">banned all variants of fentanyl<\/a> in 2019, illicit chemists began to research non-fentanyl opioids and rediscovered <strong>nitazenes<\/strong>, drugs developed in the 1950s as alternatives to morphine but never approved for medical use. Chemists modify the molecules \u2014 which are more complex than cathinones \u2014 in similar ways to increase potency.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->\u201cThis is trial and error,\u201d Dr. Alex Krotulski, director of the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education, said of the efforts. \u201cThey\u2019re pushing the envelope to make more and more potent drugs.\u201d<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->By the end of 2024, at least <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/40252758\/\">22 nitazene molecules<\/a> had been identified. New variants are prized because of their inexpensive production costs, high potency and vague legal status, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10361140\/\">2023 paper<\/a>.<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->Ohio\u2019s attorney general, Dave Yost,  was referring to nitazenes when he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov\/Media\/News-Releases\/April-2022\/Warning-Issued-for-Emerging-Synthetic-Opioid-in-Oh\">warned<\/a> that \u201cFrankenstein opioids are even more lethal than the drugs already responsible for so many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/09\/27\/opinion\/fentanyl-overdose-deaths.html\">overdose deaths<\/a>.\u201d<!----><!--]--><!----><\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--]--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--[--><!--[!--><!----><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-text  svelte-wbgwfj\"><!--[--><!---->China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/LSS\/Announcement\/Details\/7e29daf9-1d49-45e6-95e7-8ce932bc94e1\">banned nitazenes<\/a> in July 2025, a move that may cause production to shift to other countries.
