The floodgates have not completely opened, as spring has been slow to arrive in much of North America, but we had a lovely burst of spring photos land in the <a href=\"https:\/\/app.viralsweep.com\/contest\/full\/371f8a-217012?framed=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GPOD submission form<\/a> over the weekend. One of those submissions came from a GPODer I featured in last week\u2019s 2025 spring roundup, Gail Bromer in Black Mountain, North Carolina. On Friday I featured her submission of the volunteer work she does for her local gardening club (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/article\/the-work-of-the-black-mountain-beautification-committee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Work of the Black Mountain Beautification Committee<\/a>), but Gail has also shared her vibrant home garden several times (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/article\/gails-garden-on-the-side-of-a-mountain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gail\u2019s Garden on the Side of a Mountain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/article\/the-light-of-spring-after-a-dark-fall-and-winter-in-north-carolina-part-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Light of Spring After a Dark Fall and Winter in North Carolina<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/article\/a-perfect-addition-to-the-gray-of-winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Perfect Addition to the Gray of Winter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/article\/yearning-for-the-colors-of-my-garden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yearning for the Colors of My Garden<\/a>, and more). Today she is back to share the color that has emerged in her garden so far this spring.<\/p>\n<p><em>Started 9 years ago from a bare slate on the side of a mountain at 3300\u2019. I generally plant hardiness 6. We have plenty of winter days at 20 degrees and it\u2019s gotten to -5.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/04\/10135543\/GPOD-Bromer-1-phlox-on-stone-wall.jpg\"><\/a><em>These <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/phlox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phlox<\/a> are at the bottom of the first garden you see when you drive up to the house. They help set the stage. Many of my gardens are on slopes. I mix in evergreens, trees, shrubs and perennials to hold the slopes. Annuals get added to the edges to add color later in the season. They sit in front of an antique sharpening wheel and one of our earliest blooming azaleas. They are along a path right next to the woods. I decided I needed to have some, but didn\u2019t want them in my more \u201cformal\u201d garden areas.
