Backfill with amended soil and water thoroughly to settle.<\/p>\n<p>When planting, choose a site to accommodate the plant\u2019s full size and avoid locations prone to strong, gusty winds.<\/p>\n<p>Those grown in containers may need to be watered daily, and a four-inch <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/composting\/mulching-low-maintenance-gardening\/\">layer of mulch<\/a><\/strong> will help to retain moisture.<\/p>\n<p>Feed with a slow release, balanced fertilizer, with a 10-10-10 (NPK) ratio, in early spring.<\/p>\n<p>For container growth, ensure your pots have an adequate layer of drainage material and most importantly, holes in the bottom.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1500\" data-pin-description=\"Hydrangeas are flowering shrubs that produce large, rounded or cone-shaped blooms in shades of white, pink, blue, and purple from summer through fall. Some shrubs will even show all three colors at once!<\/p>\n<p>If unsure of your soil\u2019s pH, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/composting\/soil-test-tips\/\">it\u2019s wise to test before planting<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To alter pH levels and manipulate flower color, treat the soil well before flowers bloom, starting in late summer and continuing the following spring.<\/p>\n<p>To encourage blue blooms, grow in acidic soil with a pH of 5.2 to 5.5.<\/p>\n<p>Incorporating naturally acidic materials such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/composting\/composting-coffee-grounds\/\">coffee grounds<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/composting\/peat-moss\/\">peat moss<\/a><\/strong>, pine needles, oak leaves, or sawdust will increase levels slightly and slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Or, you can increase soil acidity by adding aluminum sulfate, ammonium sulfate, or a soil acidifier.<\/p>\n<p>For mauve to pink blooms, a more alkaline soil is needed with a range of pH 6.0 to 6.2.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/how-to\/lawns-and-grass\/lime\/\">Garden lime is the easiest way to raise the soil pH<\/a><\/strong> (making it more alkaline). Apply at the rate outlined in package specifications.<\/p>\n<p>Retest your soil periodically to monitor the effects of any soil amendment \u2013 over time, the pH will revert back to original levels.<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re want to maintain a certain pH level, soil should be tested annually.<\/p>\n<p>Also, it should be noted that species with true white or cream flowers, like the oakleaf, <em>H. quercifolia<\/em>,\u00a0will stay their original color regardless of the soil\u2019s chemical composition.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Species-and-Cultivars\">Species and Cultivars<\/h2>\n<p>These are the most commonly grown garden species in North America:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bigleaf \u2013 <em>H. macrophylla<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Climbing \u2013 <em>H. petiolaris<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Mountain <em>\u2013 H. serrata<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Oakleaf \u2013 <em>H. quercifolia<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Panicle \u2013 <em>H. paniculata\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Smooth \u2013 <em>H. arborescens<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at each of these in a bit more detail:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bigleaf<\/h3>\n<p>The original Endless Summer\u00ae hydrangea bigleaf variety (<em>H. macrophylla \u2018<\/em>Bailmer\u2019) is a garden favorite prized for its uniform, rounded growth.<\/p>\n<p>It reaches about three to five feet tall with a similar spread and produces large mophead flowers in colors of pink to sapphire.<\/p>\n<p>Blooming profusely from June to September, large, dark green leaves add to the color display, turning shades of burgundy and scarlet in autumn.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fastgrowingtrees.sjv.io\/bOPEZb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" alt=\"A close up square image of blue Endless Summer hydrangea growing in a border outside a house.\" class=\"wp-image-198757 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Endless-Summer-Hydrangea.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Endless-Summer-Hydrangea.jpg\" alt=\"A close up square image of blue Endless Summer hydrangea growing in a border outside a house.\" class=\"wp-image-198757\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fastgrowingtrees.sjv.io\/bOPEZb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>H. macrophylla<\/em> \u2018Bailmer\u2019 (Endless Summer\u00ae)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Flowers form on new and old wood and should be pruned in late summer as for old wood. Hardy in Zones 4 to 9.<\/p>\n<p>Bigleaf makes a terrific foundation or specimen plant and works well in hedges, perennial beds, and privacy screens \u2013 it definitely rates a space where it can be admired from your patio or windows.<\/p>\n<p>The big, beautiful blooms attract butterflies and are wonderful in dried or fresh flower arrangements as well.<\/p>\n<p>You can find Endless Summer\u00ae plants in one- and two-gallon containers <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fastgrowingtrees.sjv.io\/bOPEZb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">available at Fast Growing Trees<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Climbing<\/h3>\n<p>A bold, rambling species, climbing hydrangea (<em>H. petiolaris<\/em>) features large, fragrant white blooms in a lacecap style that flower in late spring to mid-summer.<\/p>\n<p>As they age, flowers turn a deep brick red \u2013 the same color as the attractive, peeling bark. And the rich, dark green foliage gives a show of autumn yellow.<\/p>\n<p>Easy to grow, it clings to brickwork, up tree trunks, or wooden walls without support and is happy in either shade or sun.<\/p>\n<p>Lateral branches develop as the plant grows, giving a deep, layered look.
