Hi GPODers!<\/p>\n

One of the many special aspects of Garden Photo of the Day is our ability to see how a garden evolves through the seasons and over years. Lila Johnson\u2019s garden in Mill Creek, Washington (Zone 8b) is one that we have had the\u00a0pleasure of seeing in many different iterations\u00a0(Check out some of her previous submissions: Lila\u2019s Azaleas in Washington<\/a>, Spring Greens and Purples in the PNW<\/a>, Lila\u2019s Colorful Containers in Washington<\/a>, Lila\u2019s August Color<\/a>, Lila\u2019s Autumn Garden<\/a>, and more), and each new submission still brings exciting new color and interest. Today we\u2019re enjoying another spectacular spring submission with some of the familiar greens and purples that we have seen from Lila\u2019s garden in the past, as well as exciting new additions she has made in time for her gardening club\u2019s annual tour later this year.<\/p>\n

Hi, my husband and I are working hard, weather permitting, getting our yard ready for a July 25, 2026, Mill Creek Garden Tour<\/a>. I\u2019ve been a member of the Mill Creek Garden Club<\/a> since 2008, and I am \u201cretiring\u201d from board activities, going out with a MIC DROP of showing our garden at this fundraiser. It is a \u201cperfectly beautiful to us\u201dgarden and we do love to share it.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ah, spring! It\u2019s unpredictable as usual. We had a couple 70 degree days and now we\u2019re back down into the upper 40\u2019s at night with 50\u2019s in the daytime.<\/em><\/p>\n

For the tour we are packing in the summer annuals for color, and they could use the sun, as could we. My attached photos don\u2019t have a lot of color, but even my husband remarks at the \u201cmany shades of green\u201d in the spring. I hope you enjoy a bit of Pacific NW, the springtime version. (North of Seattle, WA, Zone 8b)<\/em><\/p>\n

Think SUNSHINE!<\/em>
Lila Johnson<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a>Baby\u2019s tears (<\/em>Soleirolia soleirolii, Zones 9\u201311 or as an annual) ground cover, Himalayan maidenhair ferns <\/em>(<\/em>Adiantum<\/a> venustum, Zones 5\u20139). I wish I could identify the large, glossy leaf plant. It comes back year after year in this shady location\u2026.and I \u201cpinch\u201d it back to keep it in scale with everything else. There\u2019s also a hardy fuchsia<\/em> (<\/em>Fuchsia<\/a> magellanica, Zones 5\u201310)<\/em> growing.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"purple<\/a>Purple heliotrope<\/em> (<\/em>Heliotropium<\/a> arborescens, Zones 10\u201311 or as an annual)<\/em> and deer fern<\/em> (<\/em>Blechnum<\/a> spicant, Zones 5\u20138)<\/em> with an old, dry branch in a lime green planter on a shady patio, near our Woodland Garden area.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"bright<\/a>A work in progress for the July 25 garden tour \u2013 a mini-Japanese garden. We\u2019ve moved things around, so now I need to adjust the \u201criver\u201d rocks and add a bit of gravel to the area. (AND clean the back of our house there when I\u2019m done!) Baby\u2019s tears (stepable ground cover that loves shade), deer ferns and a couple different hostas<\/a>. You can see the droppings of a very old Japanese pieris<\/em> (<\/em>Pieris<\/a> japonica, Zones 5\u20138)<\/em> on the right. And in the lower left corner, part of a wire cloche is visible; we have a real battle with rabbits.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"pink<\/a>More from our mini-Japanese garden, which is awaiting bark (Fertil-Mulch) to be added next week. The Japanese maple that \u201ctowers\u201d over this mini-garden is \u2018Olsen\u2019s Frosted Strawberry\u2019<\/em> (<\/em>Acer<\/a> palmatum \u2018Olsen\u2019s Frosted Strawberry\u2019<\/em>, Zones 6\u20138). It has been in our garden about 4 years, and this spring I finally pruned it so it doesn\u2019t get too tall or brush up against our windows.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"mini<\/a>This is the mini-Japanese garden from a distance. I pruned the \u2018Olsen\u2019s Frosted Strawberry\u2019 Japanese maple. It stands over the garden below. We still have to put down the Fertil-Mulch and help the grass perk up a bit, but we have over 60 days to get it looking nice. The two<\/em> Japanese pieris<\/em> are over 25 years old and they will get a haircut when they are done blooming.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"purple<\/a>Another purple clematis, \u2018The President\u2019, I think. This is our Butterfly Garden, all perennials, awaiting warmth, sunshine and bark!<\/em><\/p>\n
