<\/em>hardly be considered a luxury ingredient anymore, <em>fresh green peppercorns<\/em>, on the other hand, offer a mind-blowing taste sensation that\u2019s hard to come by.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, these are the <em>same<\/em> peppercorns, only fresh rather than dried.<\/p>\n<p>Peppercorns are grown commercially in tropical locales and don\u2019t hold up long in their fresh form, so you won\u2019t be likely to see it in the average North American grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>Grow your own crop of this tropical spice, however, and the problem is solved!<\/p>\n<p>A member of the Piperaceae family related to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/plants\/houseplants\/grow-peperomia\/\">peperomias<\/a><\/strong>,<em> P. nigrum<\/em> is a vining tropical plant that produces long clusters of drupes \u2013 we know these as peppercorns.<\/p>\n<p>Its leaves are heart shaped, the vines can reach 30 feet long, and can be grown outdoors year-round in USDA Hardiness Zones 10 to 11.<\/p>\n<p>Peppercorn plants should be placed in part sun (or full sun in milder climates), in soil that is moist and well-draining.<\/p>\n<p>Be patient \u2013 the vines only start bearing fruit after four to five years.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I lean towards a plant-based diet these days, fresh green peppercorns are scrumptious when included in a creamy pan sauce and poured over chicken or steak.<\/p>\n<p>As an alternative to animal protein, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenerspath.com\/plants\/vegetables\/grow-mushrooms\/\">mushrooms<\/a><\/strong> also provide a harmonious flavor The green or purple leaves of this herb are oval shaped, wrinkled, and have serrated edges.<\/p>\n<p>In the garden, shiso thrives in full sun or part shade and prefers well-drained soil.<\/p>\n<p>The leaves can be picked sparingly as soon as young plants are a few inches tall, and more established plants can be harvested at will.<\/p>\n<p>Shiso is listed as an invasive species in some locations, so be sure to check with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uaex.uada.edu\/about-extension\/united-states-extension-offices.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">your local extension office<\/a><\/strong> before growing it.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to flavor, perilla seems to be the inkblot test of herbs \u2013 ask 10 people what it tastes like, and you might get 10 different answers!<\/p>\n<p>Some folks notice citrus or mint flavors, others may detect cinnamon and celery.
