Happy Friday GPODers!<\/p>\n

When we celebrate our gardens we\u2019re not only praising the plants we have cultivated, but also the time and energy we spent creating the outdoor spaces that bring us joy. For\u00a0Carol Gibson in Quarryville, Pennsylvania (Zone 7a) the past 20 years have been spent creating a landscape of her favorite plants from the completely blank slate that she began with. She has acquired a beautiful array of plants that are interesting and inspiring, but it is the vision she had and the love she put into the landscape that makes it special.<\/p>\n

My home was purchased in 2005, having a totally clean slate. Most of the gardens surround my house, affording privacy. The style is predominantly a free-flowing cottage garden, filled with my favorite trees, shrubs and perennials. Mother Nature, quite clearly, rules my gardens!<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a>The lupines put out a show starting in May, along with the weigela<\/a> shrubs, in an upper bed where there once was a fence line filled with scrub trees and poison ivy!<\/em><\/p>\n

\"multi-colored<\/a>Wildflower seeds cast 3 years ago have created this prolific sea of sweet William<\/em> (<\/em>Dianthus<\/a> barbatus, Zones 3\u20139), so many colors and a lovely scent!<\/em><\/p>\n

\"fringe<\/a>Behold the fringe tree<\/em> (<\/em>Chionanthus<\/a> virginicus, Zones 3\u20139) accompanied by a happy weigela.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"foundation<\/a>This bed was created in memory of my parents. It is filled with hellebores, a young photinia<\/a>, several sizes of Hinoki cypress (my favorite evergreen), a red-tipped Japanese pieris<\/em> (<\/em>Pieris<\/a> japonica, Zones 4\u20138)<\/em> and too many perennials to list all of them!<\/em><\/p>\n

The bee balm is surrounded by purple coneflowers<\/a> (<\/em>Echinacea purpurea, Zones 3\u20139)<\/em> and yellow loosestrife<\/em> (<\/em>Lysimachia vulgaris, Zones 4\u20138<\/em>). The invasive plants may make you cringe, but I keep them in check and have very few weeds!<\/em><\/p>\n

\"mixture<\/a>I love this holly fern<\/em> (<\/em>Cyrtomium<\/a> falcatum, Zones 7\u201310<\/em>)<\/em> in a bed of lush green foliage.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"garden<\/a>This bed has gone through several revisions, but now has a star magnolia<\/em> (<\/em>Magnolia<\/a> stellata, Zones 4\u20138<\/em>), ninebark shrub (<\/em>Physocarpus<\/a> opulifolius, Zones 2\u20138<\/em>), turtleheads, \u2018Silver Mound\u2019 artemisia<\/em> (<\/em>Artemisia<\/a> schmidtiana \u2018Silver Mound\u2019<\/em>, Zones 3\u20139<\/em>), salvias<\/a> and a very cool \u2018Little Redhead\u2019 Indian pink<\/em> (<\/em>Spigelia marilandica \u2018Little Redhead\u2019<\/em>, Zones 5\u20139<\/em>)<\/em>!<\/p>\n

\"garden<\/a>The heuchera<\/a> in this bed were removed from an arrangement in a funeral home outside urn 10 years ago! (Much happier here, ha!) There will be magnificent color when the lilies bloom this summer. You can partially see an easy care \u2018Soft Touch\u2019 holly<\/em> (<\/em>Ilex<\/a> crenata \u2018Soft Touch\u2019<\/em>, Zones 5\u20139<\/em>)<\/em> on the right side of photo.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Major<\/a>The \u2018Major Wheeler\u2019 honeysuckle<\/em> (<\/em>Lonicera<\/a> sempervirens \u2018Major Wheeler\u2019<\/em>, Zones 4\u20138<\/em>)<\/em> will attract hummingbirds if my dog stays away long enough!<\/em><\/p>\n
