However, as the temperatures continue to rise it isn\u2019t necessarily advisable or enjoyable to spend hours working in the garden to maintain those blooms. One gardener who has managed to create a colorful landscape with a wonderful collection of diverse flowers that don\u2019t require endless toiling is Tingshu Hu in Dunstable, Massachusetts. Tingshu has shared many vibrant photos of her lush and layered garden (Check out some of her previous submissions: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/article\/tingshus-back-garden-in-late-summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tingshu\u2019s Back Garden in Late Summer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/article\/tingshus-low-maintenance-garden-in-massachusetts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tingshu\u2019s Low-Maintenance Garden in Massachusetts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/article\/deedee-lulu-and-luke-in-tingshus-garden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deedee, Lulu, and Luke in Tingshu\u2019s Garden<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/article\/chickens-in-tingshus-garden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chickens in Tingshu\u2019s Garden<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/article\/flowering-trees-in-tingshus-garden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flowering Trees in Tingshu\u2019s Garden<\/a>, and more), but today she is focusing on the many low-maintenance flowers that fill her garden with color during the peak season.<\/p>\n<p><em>I would like to share some pictures of some low maintenance flowers in late spring and early summer in my garden.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/06\/23143856\/GPOD-Hu-1-foxglove-flowers.jpg\"><\/a><em>Foxglove<\/em> <em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/digitalis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digitalis<\/a> purpurea<em>, Zones 4\u20139)<\/em> f<em>lowers are biennials. They come back year after year by self seeding with randomly mixed colors. I cut back the spent spikes when there are still a few flowers on the top to minimize self seeding and encourage secondary smaller blooms. The taller plants on the left side are queen of prairie<\/em> <em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/filipendula\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Filipendula<\/a> rubra<em>, Zones 4\u20137)<\/em>.<em> They will start to bloom soon after the foxgloves.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/06\/23143858\/GPOD-Hu-2-late-spring-garden.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-231165\" src=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/06\/23143858\/GPOD-Hu-2-late-spring-garden.jpg\" alt=\"late spring flowers\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/06\/23143858\/GPOD-Hu-2-late-spring-garden.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/06\/23143858\/GPOD-Hu-2-late-spring-garden-700x467.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/06\/23143858\/GPOD-Hu-2-late-spring-garden-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><\/a><em>Growing together with foxgloves are queen of prairie, meadow rue, tall phlox<\/em> <em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/phlox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phlox<\/a> paniculata<em>, Zones 4\u20138), orange milkweed<\/em> <em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/asclepias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asclepias<\/a> tuberosa<em>, Zones 3\u20139)<\/em> <em>and hardy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/chrysanthemum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chrysanthemum<\/a>. They will keep the colors going after the foxglove blooms are finished. The purple smoke bush<\/em> <em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/cotinus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cotinus<\/a> coggygria<em> \u2018Royal Purple\u2019<\/em><em>, Zones 4\u201310)<\/em> <em>provides constant color. I sowed some chamomile seeds 3 years ago. They come back every year by self seeding. This year I started to make tea with the flowers and cutback the stems to encourage more flowers. If you look carefully, you can see Toby\u2019s butt at the left side. At the bottom left corner are a small rose bush, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/dahlia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dahlia<\/a> with white flowers and a pink <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/argyranthemum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argyranthemum<\/a> that just started to bloom. Luke, a Havanese dog, was diagnosed with diabetes a year ago and went blind soon after. After half year\u2019s treatment, he regained his vision and has been diabetes free for nearly 7 months. This part of garden used to be outside of the fence.
