Hi GPODers!<\/p>\n

Summer is here and for many gardeners that means their period of peak color. However, as the temperatures continue to rise it isn\u2019t necessarily advisable or enjoyable to spend hours working in the garden to maintain those blooms. One gardener who has managed to create a colorful landscape with a wonderful collection of diverse flowers that don\u2019t require endless toiling is Tingshu Hu in Dunstable, Massachusetts. Tingshu has shared many vibrant photos of her lush and layered garden (Check out some of her previous submissions: Tingshu\u2019s Back Garden in Late Summer<\/a>, Tingshu\u2019s Low-Maintenance Garden in Massachusetts<\/a>, Deedee, Lulu, and Luke in Tingshu\u2019s Garden<\/a>, Chickens in Tingshu\u2019s Garden<\/a>, Flowering Trees in Tingshu\u2019s Garden<\/a>, and more), but today she is focusing on the many low-maintenance flowers that fill her garden with color during the peak season.<\/p>\n

I would like to share some pictures of some low maintenance flowers in late spring and early summer in my garden.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a>Foxglove<\/em> (<\/em>Digitalis<\/a> purpurea, Zones 4\u20139)<\/em> flowers are biennials. They come back year after year by self seeding with randomly mixed colors. I cut back the spent spikes when there are still a few flowers on the top to minimize self seeding and encourage secondary smaller blooms. The taller plants on the left side are queen of prairie<\/em> (<\/em>Filipendula<\/a> rubra, Zones 4\u20137)<\/em>. They will start to bloom soon after the foxgloves.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"late<\/a>Growing together with foxgloves are queen of prairie, meadow rue, tall phlox<\/em> (<\/em>Phlox<\/a> paniculata, Zones 4\u20138), orange milkweed<\/em> (<\/em>Asclepias<\/a> tuberosa, Zones 3\u20139)<\/em> and hardy chrysanthemum<\/a>. They will keep the colors going after the foxglove blooms are finished. The purple smoke bush<\/em> (<\/em>Cotinus<\/a> coggygria \u2018Royal Purple\u2019<\/em>, Zones 4\u201310)<\/em> provides constant color. The bottom left corner is part of a heritage stone wall.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"German<\/a>On the other side of the stone wall are patches of German chamomile<\/em> (<\/em>Matricaria chamomilla, annual), mixed with catmint and more foxgloves. I sowed some chamomile seeds 3 years ago. They come back every year by self seeding. This year I started to make tea with the flowers and cutback the stems to encourage more flowers. If you look carefully, you can see Toby\u2019s butt at the left side. Toby is a Havanese dog who joined the family last June.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"pink<\/a>Looking toward the patch of foxgloves from a different angle. Several color varieties of sweet William<\/em> (<\/em>Dianthus<\/a> barbatus, Zones 3\u20139)<\/em> are mixed with lady\u2019s mantle<\/em> (<\/em>Alchemilla<\/a> mollis, Zones 3\u20138)<\/em>, and a few remaining Totally Tangerine geum<\/em>\u00a0(<\/em>Geum<\/a> \u2018Totally Tangerine\u2019<\/em>, Zones 5\u20137)<\/em> flowers. At the bottom left corner are a small rose bush, a dahlia<\/a> with white flowers and a pink argyranthemum<\/a> that just started to bloom. Near the center, tall verbena<\/a><\/em> (<\/em>Verbena bonariensis, Zones 7\u201311)<\/em> just started to bloom with purple flowers.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"bright<\/a>Rose campions<\/em> (<\/em>Silene<\/a> coronaria, Zones 4\u201310)<\/em> just started to bloom. They are also biennials that come back year after year by self seeding. At the right side by the fence are several color varieties of sweet William and yellow coreopsis<\/a>. At the bottom are pink yarrow surrounded by lady\u2019s mantle.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"garden<\/a>A Japanese iris<\/em> (<\/em>Iris<\/a> ensata, Zones 4\u20139)<\/em> with purple flowers stands by the left side of the fish pond. Other plants around the fish pond include euonymus<\/a>, a Japanese maple tree<\/em> (<\/em>Acer<\/a> palmatum, Zones 5\u20138), catmint, red twig dogwood<\/em> (<\/em>Cornus<\/a> sericea, Zones 3\u20137), peony, rose campion, coral bells, lamb\u2019s ear<\/em> (<\/em>Stachys<\/a> byzantina, Zones 4\u20138), blue fescue<\/em> (<\/em>Festuca<\/a> glauca, Zones 4\u20138), floss flower<\/em> (<\/em>Ageratum<\/a> houstonianum, annual), black eyed Susan<\/em> (<\/em>Rudbeckia<\/a> hirta, Zones 3\u20138), northern sea oats<\/em> (<\/em>Chasmanthium<\/a> latifolium, Zones 4\u20139)<\/em> and several varieties of ground cover sedums<\/a>. Beyond the blue fence is a chicken yard.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"pink<\/a>Luke walked down a gentle slope covered with ajuga<\/a> flowers and creeping Jenny<\/em> (<\/em>Lysimachia<\/a> nummularia, Zones 3\u20138). Some cheerful red strawberry flowers pop up randomly. The fenced lawn on the top left side belongs to the chickens. Luke, a Havanese dog, was diagnosed with diabetes a year ago and went blind soon after. After half year\u2019s treatment, he regained his vision and has been diabetes free for nearly 7 months. A story about Luke\u2019s recovery was posted on GPOD on 1\/6\/2026<\/em> (Luke and Toby in Tingshu\u2019s Garden<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\"front<\/a>The front garden is less wild than the back garden. Picture shows the plants along a front garden walkway. Plants on the left side include lady\u2019s mantle, blue spruce<\/em> (<\/em>Picea<\/a> pungens, Zones 2\u20137), low growing roses, hardy geranium<\/a>, catmint and peony. On the right side are catmint, coral bell, purple pincushion, yellow barberry<\/em> (<\/em>Berberis<\/a> thunbergii \u2018Aurea\u2019<\/em>, Zones 4\u20137)<\/em> and low growing roses. Filling the gaps are ground cover plants including ajuga, several varieties of sedum and creeping potentilla<\/a>. This part of garden used to be outside of the fence. We installed the metal fence 3 years ago since the rabbits developed new taste and started to eat rabbit resistant plants.<\/em><\/p>\n
