Little did I know, Gail Bromer in Black Mountain, North Carolina had already beat me to the chase. We already saw Gail\u2019s incredible collection of daylilies this week (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/article\/gails-daylilies-in-north-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gail\u2019s Daylilies in North Carolina<\/a>), and those photos made me initially miss her submission of wildflower photos from her trip to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/romo\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rocky Mountain National Park<\/a> in Colorado. This large national park has many iconic landmarks, but one trail\u2014the Tundra Communities Trail\u2014offered stunning views and a feast of fabulous wildflowers for plant lovers to enjoy. Located at high elevation and above the treeline, this is another extreme climate for these flowers to endure, but it is the exact conditions they need to grow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192053\/GPOD-Bromer-1-Dasiphora-fruticosa.jpg\"><\/a>While it would be easy to assume that the flowers that grow in this extreme environment are unlike anything we grow at our homes, the majority of these plants are relatives to common garden plants we love.\u00a0This shrubby cinquefoil (<em>Dasiphora fruticosa<\/em>, Zones 2\u20137) is a perfect example, showing off its familial resemblance to the cinquefoil shrubs and perennials that are enjoyed in gardens across North America.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192054\/GPOD-Bromer-2-Polemonium-viscosum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-231380 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192054\/GPOD-Bromer-2-Polemonium-viscosum.jpg\" alt=\"Polemonium viscosum\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192054\/GPOD-Bromer-2-Polemonium-viscosum.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192054\/GPOD-Bromer-2-Polemonium-viscosum-700x525.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192054\/GPOD-Bromer-2-Polemonium-viscosum-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><\/a>Most of the flower forms on these plants are consistent with their non-alpine relatives, it is the growing habit that evolves to the harsh landscape. Sticky polemonium (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/polemonium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polemonium<\/a> viscosum<\/em>, Zones 3\u20138) has flowers very similar to its relative, Jacob\u2019s ladder (<em>Polemonium caeruleum<\/em>, Zones 4\u20138), but grows only 6 inches tall to protect itself from strong wings and has succulent-like leaves that help retain water.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192056\/GPOD-Bromer-3-Primula-angustifolia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-231381 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192056\/GPOD-Bromer-3-Primula-angustifolia.jpg\" alt=\"Primula angustifolia\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192056\/GPOD-Bromer-3-Primula-angustifolia.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192056\/GPOD-Bromer-3-Primula-angustifolia-700x910.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192056\/GPOD-Bromer-3-Primula-angustifolia-768x998.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\"\/><\/a>There are several species of primroses that are native to North America, but this special little guy can only be found in Colorado and northern New Mexico: the alpine primrose (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/primula\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Primula<\/a> angustifolia<\/em>, Zones 3\u20137). The bright magenta flowers could easily be mistaken for Parry\u2019s primrose (<em>Primula parryi<\/em>, Zones 4\u20138), which grows from the subalpine zone to alpine tundra in the Rocky Mountains, but its short stature indicates its true identity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192057\/GPOD-Bromer-4-Eritrichium-nanum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-231382 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192057\/GPOD-Bromer-4-Eritrichium-nanum.jpg\" alt=\"Eritrichium nanum\" width=\"1100\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192057\/GPOD-Bromer-4-Eritrichium-nanum.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192057\/GPOD-Bromer-4-Eritrichium-nanum-700x636.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192057\/GPOD-Bromer-4-Eritrichium-nanum-768x698.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\"\/><\/a>Woodland forget-me-not (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/myosotis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Myosotis<\/a> sylvatica<\/em>, Zones 2\u20138) is an invasive in much of North America, making it onto some states\u2019 restricted plant lists. However, there are a few forget-me-nots that are native to North America, including the alpine forget-me-not (<em>Eritrichium nanum<\/em>, Zones 2\u20138).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192059\/GPOD-Bromer-5-Ranunculus-adoneus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-231383 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192059\/GPOD-Bromer-5-Ranunculus-adoneus.jpg\" alt=\"Ranunculus adoneus\" width=\"1100\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192059\/GPOD-Bromer-5-Ranunculus-adoneus.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192059\/GPOD-Bromer-5-Ranunculus-adoneus-700x636.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192059\/GPOD-Bromer-5-Ranunculus-adoneus-768x698.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\"\/><\/a>Buttercups are known for their full blooms that make wonderful cut flowers, but the simple blooms of alpine buttercups (<em>Ranunculus adoneus<\/em>, Zones 2\u20135) are just as eye-catching in bright yellow\u2014and much more appreciated by pollinators.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192101\/GPOD-Bromer-6-Phlox-diffusa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-231384 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192101\/GPOD-Bromer-6-Phlox-diffusa.jpg\" alt=\"Phlox diffusa\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192101\/GPOD-Bromer-6-Phlox-diffusa.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192101\/GPOD-Bromer-6-Phlox-diffusa-700x583.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192101\/GPOD-Bromer-6-Phlox-diffusa-768x640.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><\/a>Creeping phlox (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/phlox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phlox<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0stolonifera<\/em>, Zones 3\u20139) is popular in many spring gardens for the carpet of bright blooms it creates, but there is another ground cover phlox that is native to North America: spreading phlox (<em>Phlox diffusa<\/em>, Zones 3\u20138). Creeping phlox is native to central and eastern North America and spreading phlox call the western part of the continent home, but both can be grown in many types of habitats.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192102\/GPOD-Bromer-7-Tetraneuris-grandiflora.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-231385 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192102\/GPOD-Bromer-7-Tetraneuris-grandiflora.jpg\" alt=\"Tetraneuris grandiflora\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192102\/GPOD-Bromer-7-Tetraneuris-grandiflora.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192102\/GPOD-Bromer-7-Tetraneuris-grandiflora-700x770.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192102\/GPOD-Bromer-7-Tetraneuris-grandiflora-768x845.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\"\/><\/a>Old-man-of-the-mountain (<em>Tetraneuris grandiflora<\/em>, Zones 3\u20138) is a very silly name for this cheerful plant in the sunflower family. Also known as the alpine sunflower, the other common name comes from the white hairs that cover the plant\u2019s stem, which you can faintly see in this photo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192104\/GPOD-Bromer-8-Trifolium-nanum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-231386 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192104\/GPOD-Bromer-8-Trifolium-nanum.jpg\" alt=\"Trifolium nanum\" width=\"1200\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192104\/GPOD-Bromer-8-Trifolium-nanum.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192104\/GPOD-Bromer-8-Trifolium-nanum-700x438.jpg 700w, https:\/\/images.finegardening.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/07\/30192104\/GPOD-Bromer-8-Trifolium-nanum-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><\/a>Gail clearly had a keen eye for these diminutive plants, as many other hikers surely walked right past these small pops of color.
