In Atlanta, Georgia, Berri has spent years learning what thrives in the filtered light beneath mature trees. Her garden has become a personal, ever-evolving retreat shaped by patience, observation, and a love of plants. Berri says:<\/p>\n

Our backyard sanctuary has been a work in progress since we moved in 35 years ago. A lot of research went into the selection of shrubs and perennials that are planted among the oak and pine trees in our shaded forest. The shrubs around our property line are now mature; they provide lots of natural privacy. Bluebirds, cardinals, thrashers, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, robins, and goldfinches visit each year. We enjoy lots of time on the patio and deck in the spring, summer, and fall.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

A blue lacecap hydrangea<\/a><\/em> (Hydrangea macrophylla \u2018Lacecap Blue\u2019, Zones 5\u20139) is situated along the path that runs through a bed of azaleas<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(Rhododendron cvs., Zones 6\u201310) and various perennials, while off to the right is a teak bench that provides a relaxing spot to enjoy a peaceful view.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Perennial<\/p>\n

The toad lily<\/a> <\/em>(Tricyrtis cvs., Zones 4\u20139) is thriving in its happy place around the trunk of a crepe myrtle<\/a><\/em> (Lagerstroemia cvs., Zones 6\u20139). Next to it is a planter with red-silver and variegated white-silver inch plant <\/em>(Tradescantia zebrina<\/a>, Zones 9\u201311)\u00a0and a primrose (<\/em>Primula<\/a> cvs., Zones 3\u20138). In the background is the front of the azalea bed, which is fronted with lamb\u2019s ear<\/a> <\/em>(Stachys byzantina, Zones 4\u20139).<\/em><\/p>\n

\"side<\/p>\n

This side border is situated alongside my property line. The stacked stone provides a lovely backdrop to the yarrow <\/em>(Achillea millefolium<\/a>, Zones 3\u20139) on the left, a rose bush in the center, and a hydrangea on the right. The concrete planter in the background is filled with Miss Muffet caladiums <\/em>(Caladium \u00d7 hortulanum \u2018Miss Muffet\u2019, Zones 9\u201312) and a dragon wing pink begonia <\/em>(Begonia \u00d7 hybrida \u2018Dragon Wing Pink\u2019, annual).<\/p>\n

\"Japanese<\/p>\n

Also along the side border is a \u2018Viridis\u2019 weeping Japanese maple<\/a><\/em> (Acer palmatum var. dissectum \u2018Viridis\u2019, Zones 5\u20138) growing next to a dwarf Hinoki cypress tree <\/em>(Chamaecyparis obtusa, Zones 4\u20138).<\/p>\n

\"Basil<\/p>\n

A happy bush-type basil plant<\/a> <\/em>(Ocimum basilicum, annual) grows in front of a bronze fennel plant <\/em>(Foeniculum vulgare \u2018Purpureum\u2019, Zones 4\u20139). Birds love to perch on the metal trellis before taking a bath.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Poppies,<\/p>\n

Poppies<\/em> (Papaver<\/a> cvs., annual) and a bush rose complement each other<\/em> here<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"Coleus,<\/p>\n

Just one of many pieces of my Vietnamese pottery collection: I love the combination of coleus <\/em>(Coleus scutellarioides, annual)\u00a0and grass in this container. The daylily\u00a0<\/em>(Hemerocallis<\/a>\u00a0cvs., Zones 3\u20139)\u00a0beside the planter blends nicely with it.<\/em><\/p>\n
