Light<\/h3>\n

Outdoors these succulents will tolerate very bright sunlight as well as part shade \u2013 and as houseplants they will need at least four hours of direct sunlight per day.<\/p>\n

However, be sure to move to brighter light more gradually, since their leaves can be scorched if placed in full sun without a gentle transition.<\/p>\n

When growing gasteraloes indoors, if you don\u2019t have enough direct sunshine from a window, you can consider supplementing with a grow light<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Soil<\/h3>\n

Like most succulents, gasteraloes need soil with excellent drainage and a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.<\/p>\n

Be sure to choose a cactus and succulent soil that is gritty and contains ingredients like pumice, or sand.<\/p>\n

In winter, you should allow the growing medium to dry completely between waterings \u2013 water applications once a month should be enough.<\/p>\n

However, in summer when conditions are hotter, keep the soil moist but not soggy.<\/p>\n

Fertilizer<\/h3>\n

These plants only need to be fertilized once a year in spring.<\/p>\n

Cultivars to Select<\/h2>\n

There are many lovely types of gasteraloes you can grow, each of them with a different look depending on its plant parents.<\/p>\n

Here are some of the easiest to find and most attractive:<\/p>\n

Green Ice<\/h3>\n

\u2018Green Ice,\u2019 the most popular gasteraloe, is a cross between \u2018Little Warty\u2019 gasteria, and Aloe variegata<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The triangular leaves are silvery green with dark green stripes and white speckles. Expect \u2018Green Ice\u2019 to reach six to 12 inches tall.<\/p>\n

Lizard Tail<\/h3>\n

\u2018Lizard Tail\u2019 features an open rosette of thick, dark green, pointed, and speckled leaves.<\/p>\n

This hybrid of Gasteria carinata<\/em> var. verrucosa <\/em>and Aristaloe aristata <\/em>reaches up to eight inches tall and six inches wide.<\/p>\n

You may see this cultivar classified as Gasteraloe beguinii<\/em>, but it\u2019s actually a hybrid.<\/p>\n

\u2018Lizard Tail\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Maintenance<\/h2>\n

As I mentioned, gasteraloes don\u2019t require much upkeep. Just a few quick tasks now and then will keep your plant looking its best and help you avoid pest problems down the road.<\/p>\n

If your plant blooms, go ahead and snip off the flower spike once the blooms fade.<\/p>\n

And don\u2019t worry about the lower leaves drying out and dropping off, that\u2019s totally normal. Just pull them off when you notice them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
