Today we\u2019re visiting Janelle in the suburbs of Oklahoma City, where vegetables, flowers, and native perennials grow together in a garden built to handle summer heat. Here\u2019s what Janelle has to say:<\/p>\n

I garden in the suburbs of Oklahoma City. I started by growing only vegetables<\/a> but quickly realized a garden needs to function as an entire ecosystem to thrive. Now, I grow a mix of annual flowers and native perennials<\/a> alongside my vegetables, and they attract a surprising amount of wildlife to my suburban yard.<\/em><\/p>\n

Plants need to be heat- and drought-tolerant <\/a>to make it through an Oklahoma summer. I rely on zinnias (<\/em>Zinnia elegans, annual), portulaca (<\/em>Portulaca grandiflora, annual), globe amaranth <\/em>(Gomphrena globosa, annual), cosmos (<\/em>Cosmos bipinnatus, annual), and black-eyed Susans (<\/em>Rudbeckia hirta, Zones 3\u20137) to provide color through the hottest months. Some of my favorite perennials are pink muhly grass (<\/em>Muhlenbergia capillaris, Zones 6\u20139), hardy hibiscus (<\/em>Hibiscus moscheutos, Zones 4\u20139), and Russian sage (<\/em>Salvia yangii, Zones 4\u20139)<\/em> for year-round visual interest.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Black-eyed Susans<\/a> brighten\u00a0the garden while providing an important nectar source for pollinators.<\/p>\n

\"hardy<\/p>\n

The dinner plate\u2013sized flowers of \u2018Midnight Marvel\u2019 hardy hibiscus<\/a> (Hibiscus<\/em> moscheutos<\/em> \u2018Midnight Marvel\u2019, Zones 4\u20139) make a dramatic midsummer statement against its burgundy foliage.<\/p>\n

\"globe<\/p>\n

A colorful mix of globe amaranth, cosmos, and other summer blooms keeps the garden buzzing with pollinators.<\/p>\n

\"portulaca<\/p>\n

\u2018Double Guava\u2019 moss rose (Portulaca ColorBlast \u2018Double Guava\u2019, annual)\u00a0thrives in Oklahoma\u2019s intense heat, producing vibrant blooms even during dry spells.<\/p>\n

\"vegetable<\/p>\n

Double garden arches covered in climbing cucumbers (Cucumis sativus<\/em>, annual) maximize growing space in the vegetable garden.<\/p>\n

\"container<\/p>\n

Barrel planters overflowing with cosmos, zinnias, dill (Anethum graveolens<\/em>, annual), and sunflowers (Helianthus annuus<\/em>, annual) combine ornamental beauty with plants that support beneficial insects<\/a>.<\/p>\n
