Today we\u2019re returning to Carla\u2019s garden in Malvern, Pennsylvania, for a midsummer update. Here\u2019s what Carla has to say:<\/p>\n

July has brought a little of everything to my garden. We have moved from extreme heat to intense thunderstorms, with occasional stretches of unusually cool weather, before the cycle begins again.<\/em><\/p>\n

Despite the deer enjoying a few lily snacks, I have had some amazing blooms. Roses are blooming well, along with more clematis and hydrangeas galore. I was recently in the Hamptons on Long Island, New York, which reminded me why I became so captivated by the many beautiful hydrangea cultivars found in gardens there.<\/em><\/p>\n

My tomatoes are starting to fruit, and this has been a wonderful year for growing basil. I enjoy growing heirloom varieties, and this year I am growing Tuscan basil<\/a> (<\/em>Ocimum basilicum \u2018Tuscan\u2019, annual) and Neapolitan basil (<\/em>Ocimum basilicum \u2018Neapolitan\u2019, annual) from seed.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u2018Annabelle\u2019 smooth hydrangea<\/a><\/em> (<\/em>Hydrangea arborescens \u2018Annabelle\u2019, Zones 3\u20139)<\/em> is so beautiful next to a birdbath<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"oriental<\/p>\n

Despite the attention of hungry deer, this Oriental lily reached 5 feet tall this year!<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Shasta<\/p>\n

Shasta daisies<\/em> (<\/em>Leucanthemum<\/a> \u00d7 superbum, Zones 5\u20139)<\/em> are sunny and sweet, and love hot weather!<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Millennium<\/p>\n

\u2018Millennium\u2019 azalea<\/a><\/em> (<\/em>Rhododendron \u2018Millennium\u2019, Zones 5\u20139)<\/em> is literally the last to bloom in my garden.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"tomato,<\/p>\n

Tomatoes<\/a> are something I grow in giant pots, and I prefer those grown by seed. Meet \u2018Costoluto Fiorentino,\u2019 an Italian heirloom tomato variety<\/em> (<\/em>Solanum lycopersicum \u2018Costoluto Fiorentino\u2019, annual)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"texture,<\/p>\n

Texture and color are part of my garden. A threadleaf Japanese maple<\/a><\/em> (Acer palmatum var.<\/em> dissectum, Zones 5\u20138) mingles with hydrangea foliage and \u2018Sun King\u2019 Japanese spikenard<\/em> (<\/em>Aralia cordata \u2018Sun King\u2019<\/a>, Zones 3\u20139).<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Hydrangea<\/p>\n

Lime Rickey smooth hydrangea<\/em> (<\/em>Hydrangea arborescens Lime Rickey,<\/em> Zones 3\u20139) is a cool green touch in a hot summer garden.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Moroccan<\/p>\n

\u2018Moroccan Rose\u2019<\/em> (Rosa \u2018Moroccan Rose\u2019, Zones 6\u201311)<\/em> is so beautiful and easy to grow. This upright shrub was collected by an international rose rustler in Morocco years ago. It has damask and hybrid perpetual qualities and is a repeat bloomer.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"clematis<\/p>\n

This is \u2018Tie Dye\u2019 clematis<\/em> (<\/em>Clematis \u2018Tie Dye\u2019, Zones 4\u20139),<\/em> who took a couple of years to get herself established and now she is a prolific summer bloomer.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"wood<\/p>\n

An owl carved from a red oak (<\/em>Quercus rubra, Zones 3\u20138) that once grew on the property stands at the edge of the woods, surrounded by a planting bed filled with witch hazel (<\/em>Hamamelis<\/a> cvs., Zones 3\u20139), daffodils (<\/em>Narcissus cvs., Zones 3\u20139), roses<\/em>, lilies, serviceberry (<\/em>Amelanchier<\/a> cvs., Zones 2\u20139), and peonies (<\/em>Paeonia cvs., Zones 3\u20139). What is in bloom depends on the season. The sculpture is sealed with a clear finish, preserving the natural color of the red oak.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"yellow<\/p>\n

It wouldn\u2019t be summer without a sunny lemon-colored heirloom daylily!<\/em><\/p>\n

\"big<\/p>\n
