Today we\u2019re heading to Northwest Philadelphia to visit Asha\u2019s imaginative city garden. Nearly every corner offers something unexpected, from repurposed household objects to playful details tucked among the plants. Here\u2019s what Asha has to say:<\/p>\n

On a small lot surrounding an urban twin house in Northwest Philadelphia, I have created a playful mix of found objects and plants. The garden is dedicated to feeding my family and to inspiring children to love ornamentals of all kinds.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

A blue Buddha solemnly prays beside a pink anemone in bud and a silvery kale (<\/em>Brassica oleracea,<\/em> annual) variety up front.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"garden<\/p>\n

A Buddha sitting on a porcelain throne is perhaps a tad irreverent, but maintaining a sense of humor is surely in keeping with Buddhist philosophy. He\u2019s seated with sedum and beside the sink of succulents<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"broken<\/p>\n

Under the home\u2019s eaves, where rainwater doesn\u2019t reach the garden, broken pottery I\u2019ve gathered from numerous sources is playfully practical.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"garden,<\/p>\n

In the backyard, I keep chickens to provide eggs for my family. And elsewhere, a beehive makes sure plants are pollinated. Honey is flavored by flowers throughout my community.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"perennial<\/p>\n

We can\u2019t forget the claw-foot tub with netting draped around the shower head. The composition is sparked by a flame red flamingo.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"succulent<\/p>\n

Succulents and shells fill the bowls. And at the base, counterclockwise, we see shards of terra-cotta, \u2018Caramel\u2019 coral bells<\/a><\/em> (<\/em>Heuchera \u2018Caramel\u2019, Zones 4\u20138), spotted widow\u2019s tears (<\/em>Tinantia pringlei, Zones 7\u201311), hellebore (<\/em>Helleborus<\/a> cvs., Zones 4\u20139) and violets, the last fuchsia gladiola flower, and a pot of \u2018Millenium\u2019 ornamental onion<\/em> (<\/em>Allium \u2018Millenium\u2019<\/a>, Zones 5\u20138).<\/em><\/p>\n

\"potted<\/p>\n

Cacti in pots are enmeshed with my kids\u2019 toys so my gardens inspire play and practicality. Toys and toiling happily coexist here.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"garden<\/p>\n

My garden earned status as a finalist for the PHS (Pennsylvania Horticultural Society) home garden that best combines edibles and ornamentals.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"side<\/p>\n

With permission of my neighbors, I even tend shrubs like Peach Drift rose (<\/em>Rosa<\/a> \u2018Meiggili\u2019 Peach Drift, Zones 4\u201311) and saplings of Rose of Sharon hibiscus<\/a> (<\/em>Hibiscus syriacus, Zones 5\u20139) along the long driveway.<\/em><\/p>\n
