Today we\u2019re visiting David in Beavercreek, Ohio, where hedges do much more than define the edges of garden beds. Over the past decade, David and his family have used them to shape pathways, create garden rooms, and bring structure to the property. Here\u2019s what David has to say:<\/p>\n

This has been a 10-year project, evolving into a mostly finished garden. Inspired by English manicured hedges<\/a>, we have created a unique and special garden for the family to enjoy.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Clipped boxwoods<\/em> (<\/em>Buxus<\/a> cvs., Zones 5\u20139) line the long pathway leading from the side entrance to the front courtyard.<\/em><\/p>\n

Eight garden areas incorporate more than 1,000 boxwoods\u00a0to create this intricate knot garden.<\/em><\/p>\n

Boxwoods of various sizes are clipped into rounded, cloudlike forms, while a row of trimmed \u2018Fastigiata\u2019 European hornbeams (<\/em>Carpinus betulus \u2018Fastigiata\u2019, Zones 4\u20138) defines the perimeter.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Purple<\/p>\n

Purple European beech (<\/em>Fagus<\/a> sylvatica, Zones 4\u20137) was purchased by the linear foot to create an instant hedge<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Hidden pathways guide visitors into other gardens throughout the property.<\/em><\/p>\n
