As an environmental horticulturist who started her career with a passion for growing food, I have to admit I\u2019m a sucker for a huge summer vegetable garden<\/a>. Today we\u2019re heading to Fort Barnwell, North Carolina<\/a>, to see what Rob has growing in his productive Zone 8b garden this summer. Here\u2019s what he has to say:<\/p>\n

We do containers<\/a> all year and have this 60-by-45-foot plot. I\u2019m going to be 72, and the weeds are ahead<\/a> at the moment. July was really hot here this year, and then the rain finally came, so I\u2019m getting back to it. The <\/em>wheel ho<\/em>e\u00a0is ready.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Summer crops<\/a> fill my container-growing area, where I garden throughout the year.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"celosia\"<\/p>\n

This celosia (<\/em>Celosia<\/a> argentea cvs., annual) is looking pretty good. The weeds need to go, but it\u2019s been hot on this old guy!<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Butterfly<\/p>\n

\u2018Dixie Butterpea\u2019 Southern pea (<\/em>Phaseolus lunatus \u2018Dixie Butterpea\u2019, annual) growing in a 7-gallon container.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"tomato<\/p>\n

The dreaded tomato spotted wilt virus, or TSWV, showing up on one of my tomato plants.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Seminole<\/p>\n

\u2018Seminole\u2019 corn (<\/em>Zea mays \u2018Seminole\u2019, annual) is just about ready. Good summer eating!<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\u2018Hossinator\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Hossinator\u2019 tomato<\/a> (<\/em>Solanum lycopersicum \u2018Hossinator\u2019, annual) growing strong in the foreground from plugs.<\/em><\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t necessarily planned on canning<\/a>, but with a tomato harvest like this and so much more still coming, plans may have changed!<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\u2018Purple<\/p>\n

\u2018Purple Boy\u2019 tomato (<\/em>Solanum lycopersicum \u2018Purple Boy\u2019, annual) is just starting to come in. Hopefully there will be plenty for fall if we don\u2019t get a storm<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The wheel hoe is calling me! I also had to discourage the ducks from helping themselves to the late \u2018Seminole\u2019 corn.<\/em><\/p>\n
