Today we\u2019re visiting Candice\u2019s garden in New Jersey, in Newton (Zone 6a), which went through exactly that kind of shift last fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"1082\" data-end=\"1283\"><em data-start=\"1082\" data-end=\"1283\">I started these gardens in May 2018, when the property was pretty much a blank slate after removing a large five-trunk maple in the backyard. I tracked the sun for a year to see what would fit where.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1285\" data-end=\"1583\"><em data-start=\"1285\" data-end=\"1583\">Last fall, my next-door neighbor removed three unhealthy trees, including one that could have come down on my house, so the amount of sunlight in the garden changed dramatically. Some things burned, while others thrived. One thing about gardens\u2014you need to be able to adapt to what nature brings.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1585\" data-end=\"1851\"><em data-start=\"1585\" data-end=\"1851\">This year, I shared my garden with the Sussex County Garden Club on July 16. The beds use several types of edging, including manufactured concrete block, branches, and a path made from tree-trunk rounds. It\u2019s still a work in progress. Lots of work and lots of fun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1585\" data-end=\"1851\">\n<p data-start=\"1585\" data-end=\"1851\">Volunteer sunflowers (<em data-start=\"246\" data-end=\"265\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/helianthus\">Helianthus<\/a> annuus<\/em>, annual)\u2014which Candice credits the goldfinches with planting\u2014tower over this part of the garden alongside \u2018Kwintus\u2019 pole beans (<em data-start=\"394\" data-end=\"414\">Phaseolus vulgaris<\/em> \u2018Kwintus\u2019, annual). The beans appear to continue up the archway in the background, drawing the eye deeper into the garden. Purple coneflowers (<em data-start=\"278\" data-end=\"298\">Echinacea purpurea<\/em>, Zones 3\u20139), roses (<em data-start=\"319\" data-end=\"325\">Rosa<\/em>\u00a0cvs., Zones 3\u20139), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/genus\/echinops\">southern globe thistle<\/a> (<em data-start=\"377\" data-end=\"393\">Echinops ritro<\/em>, Zones 3\u20138), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finegardening.com\/article\/the-best-garden-phlox\">garden phlox<\/a> (<em data-start=\"421\" data-end=\"439\">Phlox paniculata<\/em> and cvs., Zones 4\u20138), and foxgloves (<em data-start=\"477\" data-end=\"497\">Digitalis purpurea<\/em> and cvs., Zones 4\u20138) bring everything from rounded blooms to tall flower spikes.
