Happy Wednesday, GPOD! We\u2019re back in Minneapolis for Part 2 of Claire\u2019s Side-Yard Transformation<\/a>. Yesterday, she told us that she started by thinking about how she wanted to use the space and saved the plants for later. Today, we\u2019re coming back to see what\u2019s growing in the shady garden beds surrounding her patio and gazebo.<\/p>\n

I envisioned a calm palette of green, blue, silver, and white. Because the area is quite shady, I focused on foliage first and flowers second, using a handful of mostly white-flowering plants to brighten the garden. The garden beds are narrow, but I still wanted them to feel lush and layered rather than like a simple row of plants.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Another look at Claire\u2019s finished gazebo. The lush foliage planted around it makes the structure feel almost like a tiny house tucked into the garden, while the matching dragon planters filled with spider plants<\/a> (Chlorophytum comosum<\/em>, Zones 9\u201311) frame the entrance like containers beside a front door. Altogether, it feels like a cozy retreat in its own private jungle.<\/p>\n

\"Brunnera,<\/p>\n

A mix of hairy toad lily (<\/em>Tricyrtis hirta, Zones 4\u20138), \u2018Branford Beauty\u2019 fern <\/em>(Athyrium \u2018Branford Beauty\u2019, Zones 3\u20138), royal fern <\/em>(Osmunda regalis, Zones 3\u20139), \u2018Silver Heart\u2019 brunnera<\/a> <\/em>(Brunnera macrophylla \u2018Silver Heart\u2019, Zones 3\u20138), and heuchera (possibly <\/em>Heuchera \u2018Spellbound\u2019, Zones 4\u20139).<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Arisaema<\/p>\n

The tall plant next to the statue is the rare Himalayan cobra lily <\/em>(Arisaema consanguineum \u2018The Perfect Wave\u2019, Zones 5\u20138), which I desperately want to replace after this one died.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"White<\/p>\n

White martagon lily<\/a> <\/em>(Lilium martagon \u2018Album\u2019, Zones 3\u20139) has a brief but glorious bloom.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Green<\/p>\n

The Areca palm (Dypsis lutescens,<\/em> Zones 10\u201311) and \u2018White Butterfly\u2019 caladium<\/a> (Caladium bicolor \u2018White Butterfly\u2019,<\/em> Zones 9\u201311) in this container nicely tie back into the green-and-white theme used throughout the garden.<\/p>\n

\"Hosta<\/p>\n

Planted in this spot are \u2018Blue Ivory\u2019 hosta <\/em>(Hosta \u2018Blue Ivory\u2019, Zones 3\u20139), black cohosh<\/a> <\/em>(Actaea racemosa, Zones 3\u20138), Japanese painted fern<\/a> <\/em>(Athyrium niponicum var. pictum, Zones 5\u20138), \u2018Blue Shadow\u2019 fothergilla<\/a> <\/em>(Fothergilla \u00d7 intermedia \u2018Blue Shadow\u2019, Zones 5\u20138), and \u2018Guinea Fowl\u2019 goatsbeard <\/em>(Aruncus \u2018Guinea Fowl\u2019, Zones 3\u20137).<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Actaea<\/p>\n

The tall white candelabra flowers of black cohosh are a bumblebee magnet, and they sway gently above the other plants, adding height and movement to the garden. \u2018Blue Mist\u2019 dwarf fothergilla <\/em>(Fothergilla gardenii \u2018Blue Mist\u2019, Zones 5\u20138) is on the left, and you can see some umbrella plants in the bottom-right corner. If you look closely, you can also see the flower of \u2018The Perfect Wave\u2019 Himalayan cobra lily.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Gidget<\/p>\n

My prized lady\u2019s slipper <\/em>(Cypripedium Gidget, Zones 4\u20137) next to a little pulmonaria flower.<\/em><\/p>\n

Thanks for taking us along on your side-yard transformation, Claire! It\u2019s always refreshing to see gardeners embrace the shade and grow plants that are comfortable in those conditions. You\u2019ve done a wonderful job showcasing just how much interest and texture a shade garden can have. You don\u2019t need full sun to create a garden worth escaping to.
