Happy Friday! We\u2019re ending the week in Mill Creek, Washington (Zone 8b), with another visit to Lila\u2019s garden. We last heard from Lila in August, when she shared the progress of her \u2018Sparkling Burgundy\u2019 pineapple lily<\/a> and celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary with her husband, Dave. Today she\u2019s back with a look at her October garden.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve been in our home and yard north of Seattle for almost 30 years, so we\u2019ve been gardening a long time!<\/em><\/p>\n

Like us, our garden has evolved over the years, although my husband prefers \u201cneat and tidy\u201d plants, and my taste is a bit more wild. I love baby\u2019s tears ground cover (<\/em>Soleirolia soleirolii, Zones 9\u201311) rambling over stones and around the fountain; Dave does not love it as much. We do \u201cbattle\u201d over where it should wander.<\/em><\/p>\n

We have a very oddly shaped garden, larger than most in our cul-de-sac community, but we benefit from many different areas: shady and fertile, sunny with hardpan, and part sun\/part shade with decent soil.<\/em><\/p>\n

We try to attract birds with our plantings<\/a>, although we only have hummingbird feeders in our garden. We also have shelter, water features, tall trees, and lots of perennials and summer annuals.<\/em><\/p>\n

We both love having our garden looking lovely. October is a wonderful time for our hardy fuchsias (<\/em>Fuchsia cvs., Zones 7\u201310), so I\u2019ve included photos of them. This has been a warm autumn, and we still have a regular fuchsia basket in full bloom.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

This hardy fuchsia doesn\u2019t receive enough sunlight but somehow gives us fun October blossoms. It\u2019s surrounded by hostas (<\/em>Hosta cvs., Zones 3\u20139) and a laceleaf Japanese maple<\/a> (<\/em>Acer palmatum var.<\/em> dissectum, Zones 5\u20138) and grows under several trees not shown here.<\/em><\/p>\n
