Hi GPODers! Today we\u2019re welcoming back longtime contributor Susan from St. Paul, Minnesota (Zone 5a). Susan has shared her garden with us many times over the years, and today she\u2019s taking us through some of her favorite moments from late July into October. If you\u2019ve missed her previous visits, you can revisit last year\u2019s gardening season at the 45th parallel<\/a>. For now, let\u2019s see what she\u2019s been growing!<\/p>\n

Still looking back: Here are some photos from late July to October.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

Back garden, late July: I had a huge \u2018Montana Aureomarginata\u2019 hosta (<\/em>Hosta montana \u2018Aureomarginata\u2019, Zones 3\u20138) in the front garden, where it received too much sun. My husband dug it up for me, and I divided it into three clumps,<\/a> one of which is pictured above. The bluish hostas are \u2018El Ni\u00f1o\u2019 (<\/em>Hosta \u2018El Ni\u00f1o\u2019, Zones 3\u20139), and the hydrangea is \u2018Little Quick Fire\u2019 panicle hydrangea <\/em>(Hydrangea paniculata \u2018SMHPLQF\u2019, Zones 3\u20138).<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Large<\/p>\n

A second clump of \u2018Montana Aureomarginata\u2019 was replanted in the front garden, but in a shady spot under a white cedar (<\/em>Thuja occidentalis, Zones 2\u20137).<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Variegated<\/p>\n

Speaking of hostas, this is one of my favorites; even the almost pinkish flowers are pretty. The similarly colored companion is Chinese astilbe (<\/em>Astilbe chinensis, Zones 4\u20138).<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Pale<\/p>\n

Grape-leaf anemone<\/a> (<\/em>Anemone tomentosa \u2018Robustissima\u2019, Zones 4\u20138) glows in the late-afternoon sun.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Minnesota<\/p>\n

Front garden with end-of-summer gold and fuchsia: Garden phlox (<\/em>Phlox paniculata cvs.,<\/em> Zones 4\u20138), black-eyed Susans (<\/em>Rudbeckia cvs., Zones 3\u20139), and a daylily blossom (<\/em>Hemerocallis \u2018Autumn Gold\u2019, Zones 3\u20139; Sutton, 1952, not the more recent one) missed by the deer.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"White<\/p>\n

I was doing some planting in a redone, seldom-visited corner of the garden when I thought I spotted a piece of trash. It turned out to be a lone stalk and blossom of Japanese lily (<\/em>Lilium speciosum \u2018Album\u2019, Zones 5\u20138) that had somehow escaped the scarlet lily beetle ravages and that I, too, had missed in my cutting-down frenzy. I have hope that the others will have survived.<\/em><\/p>\n

According to Old House Gardens<\/a>, this is a wild ancestor of \u2018Casa Blanca\u2019. OHG last offered it in 2012, and it is now considered \u201ccommercially extinct in the Netherlands.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Two<\/p>\n

The painted lady butterflies love curly onion (<\/em>Allium senescens \u2018Glaucum\u2019, Zones 4\u20138) as much as I do. Its long-lasting blooms perk up the late-summer, early-fall garden.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Autumn<\/p>\n

\u2018Autumn Joy\u2019 stonecrop<\/a> (<\/em>Hylotelephium \u2018Herbstfreude\u2019, Zones 3\u20139) is a dependable fall bloomer, beloved by pollinators.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Tall<\/p>\n

Another fall bloomer that attracts many pollinators is black cohosh<\/a>, also known as bugbane (<\/em>Actaea racemosa, Zones 3\u20138). This photo was taken on September 22, but other clumps of it are still blooming more than a month later<\/em>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Sun<\/p>\n

\u2018Sun King\u2019 Japanese spikenard <\/em>(Aralia cordata \u2018Sun King\u2019,<\/em> Zones 3\u20139) is prized for its golden foliage, but it also develops small but interesting flowers and fruits late in the season.<\/em><\/p>\n

Thank you for sharing another look at your garden with us, Susan! I especially loved the surprise lily. Finding a flower you thought you\u2019d lost is always exciting, especially after dealing with pests!<\/p>\n
