The spring interest keeps on coming this week as we set sail for Martha’s Vineyard, an island off the coast of Massachusetts. Fran Watson has shared her vibrant garden in Vineyard Haven a handful of times (Check out her previosu submissions: Fran’s Island Garden, Fran’s Spring Garden on Martha’s Vineyard, Gardening on Martha’s Vineyard, and Jewels of Fall in Fran’s Garden), and each time her vibrant plant palette—including a beautiful assortment of blooms—was on full display. Today she is back to share some of the bright foliage and fabulous flowers that have emerged this spring.
This pink azalea is 25 years old, the cinnamon fern (Osmundastrum cinnamomeum, Zones 3–9) is one of my favorite plants.
Lupine is my idea of excitement in the garden.
Fran creates a wonderful feeling of harmony in her early season garden by repeating color palettes with a diverse selection of plants. Several bright green and chartreuse foliage plants create a glowing backdrop for bursts of pink, purple and blue blooms—like these glorious red/pink columbine.

These lilacs smell wonderful.
I love anything blue/purple in the garden—like Jacob’s ladder (Polemonium reptans, Zones 3–8).
Rhododendron have begun to bloom.
