Hi GPOD! Today we’re visiting John’s Zone 7a garden in Readington, New Jersey. His front garden is full of late-season color, so much so that I imagine anyone walking by would immediately think, “Fall is here!” It’s one of those gardens that grounds you in the season and makes you appreciate what’s happening right now. With flowers and ornamental grasses layered throughout the long border, there’s plenty to take in. Here’s John to tell us more!
Although the beds in front of my house in Readington, New Jersey, have different perennials blooming throughout spring and summer, the current flowers in bloom include garden mums (Chrysanthemum × morifolium, Zones 5–9), asters (Symphyotrichum cvs., Zones 3–8), English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia, Zones 5–9), bee balm (Monarda cvs., Zones 3–9), salvia (Salvia cvs., Zones 4–9), and speedwell (Veronica cvs., Zones 3–9), along with ornamental grasses and shrubs.
I especially enjoy creating a layered look by combining different heights and textures and repeating colors along the border. These photos, taken in late September and early October, include wider views showing the garden’s layout as well as closer looks at individual plant combinations.

Thanks for sharing your garden with us, John! A home wrapped in color is a fantastic example of front-entry appeal and how repetition, color, and texture can bring a landscape together. I especially love how the garden mums and asters carry those colors throughout the border, such a beautiful welcome for anyone passing by!
