Hi GPODers! We’re back with more fall color from New Jersey garden designers Ellen Goldfarb and Tracy Buttrick! Today we’re sharing four more of Tracy’s autumn container designs, including arrangements for narrow porches and a beautiful ginkgo-lined entrance in Saddle River.
This pot sits on a narrow front porch in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey. The height comes from broom corn (Sorghum bicolor, annual), yellow winterberries (Ilex verticillata, Zones 3–9), and pumpkins-on-a-stick (Solanum aethiopicum, annual). The purple-flowering plant is ‘Mona Lavender’ plectranthus (Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’, Zones 9–11), a plant we love but find very hard to get some years. It’s also great in a shade garden, although it seems to prefer flowering when the days are shorter. There’s also ornamental cabbage (Brassica oleracea cvs., annual), purple sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima, annual), and Algerian ivy (Hedera algeriensis, Zones 7–11).

This pot features green and brown millet, orange winterberry, ‘Mona Lavender’ plectranthus, spiked celosia (Celosia argentea var. spicata, annual), ornamental pepper (Capsicum annuum, annual), mum (Chrysanthemum × morifolium, Zones 5–9), cabbage, and heather (Calluna vulgaris, Zones 4–8).

This pot has winterberry in orange and yellow, ‘Jade Princess’ millet (Pennisetum glaucum ‘Jade Princess’, annual), pumpkins-on-a-stick, ornamental peppers, Snow Princess sweet alyssum (Lobularia ‘Inlbusnopr’, annual), and cabbage. It was one of a pair that brightened up the end of an allée of ginkgo trees (Ginkgo biloba, Zones 4–9).

Thank you again to Ellen and Tracy for sharing these beautiful fall containers with us! That ginkgo allée is especially stunning this time of year. We’ll wrap up our visit with Ellen’s cutting garden on Thursday, so stay tuned!
