Learn How to Grow Vibrant Diascia (Twinspur)

0

Potted plants may need more frequent watering than those in garden beds.

Fertilizing

Twinspur has moderate fertilizer needs when planted in humus-rich soil.

Apply a slow-release fertilizer in spring and again in mid-to-late summer using a balanced NPK formula such as 5-5-5.

A close up of the packaging of Burpee Enhanced Organic All Purpose Plant Food.

Burpee All Purpose Plant Food

I like Burpee’s All Purpose Plant Food, which you can find available at Burpee.

Alternatively you can also use a product formulated for flowering plants with a higher potassium content such as 4-6-4.

If you prefer to use liquid fertilizers, apply monthly to garden plants.

For those growing in containers, use a half-strength solution every two or three weeks – and read our guide on easy tricks to keep containers looking great all summer!

Avoid overfertilizing which can cause leggy growth.

Containers

With its mounding, trailing habit, twinspur is a natural for adding vivacious color to containers of all shapes and sizes.

Whatever pot you choose must have drainage holes to prevent soggy soil – wet conditions are a primary cause of root and crown rot.

I like to cover the bottom of containers with a layer of porous drainage material such as broken pottery or pebbles – this helps to ensure water moves freely to improve drainage.

Plant on their own or paired with other annuals, seasonal bulbs, flowering herbs, and mixed perennials for containers with a bright, long season.

For lush growth, use your favorite potting soil or make your own potted plant blend similar to this recipe – it has the nutrients, airy texture, and drainage that helps flowering annuals flourish.

  1. Into a large bin or wheelbarrow, place two parts of garden or potting soil.
  2. Mix in two parts of organic matter such as compost, well-rotted manure, or worm castings.
  3. Add in one part of moisture retentive materials such as coco pith (coconut coir), peat moss, or vermiculite – this is helpful for containers that tend to dry out quickly in hot sunshine.
  4. If needed, add in one part of gritty materials such as landscape sand, stone chips, pea gravel, or perlite to ensure well-draining soil.

Avoid using garden soil alone for potted flowers, it’s too heavy and compacts easily, causing root problems.

Cultivars to Select

For colorful diascia cultivars, check the bedding plant section of your favorite garden center. Seeds can be a bit elusive to source, but some are available from online retailers.

Here’s a sampling to whet your appetite:

Daydream

What a day for ‘Daydream’ diascia (D. fetcaniensis)! This creeping charmer offers handsome mounds of bubble gum pink flowers with plum throats that flower all summer and into fall.

A horizontal image of 'Daydream' pink flowers growing in the garden pictured in bright sunshine.A horizontal image of 'Daydream' pink flowers growing in the garden pictured in bright sunshine.

Plants grow up to 10 inches tall and 18 inches wide, and the spreading habit is ideal for front of border placements or spilling over container rims.

A light shear when plants become leggy gives a good second bloom and ‘Daydream’ overwinters well in mild climates.

Little Tango

Dramatic as the dance it’s named for, Little Tango® (aka ‘Pentang’) makes a big impact with masses of coral-orange flowers accented with mango throats that bloom over a long season.

A horizontal image of orange 'Little Tango' twinspur growing in the garden pictured in bright sunshine on a soft focus background.A horizontal image of orange 'Little Tango' twinspur growing in the garden pictured in bright sunshine on a soft focus background.

The mounding and slightly trailing plants grow 10 inches tall and spread 12 inches.

A vibrant choice for hanging baskets, beds, borders, and containers – trim when leggy for a nice show into autumn.

Monhop Pink

With a continuous display from late spring to early fall, ‘Monhop Pink’ is a semi-trailing delight with waves of luscious, cerise pink blooms.

A close up horizontal image of 'Monhop Pink' flowers growing in the garden.A close up horizontal image of 'Monhop Pink' flowers growing in the garden.

The spreading plants reach up to 20 inches tall and wide and make a colorful mainstay in beds, containers, and hanging baskets. For a strong rebloom, trim after the first flush wanes.

Flying Colors Red

For eye-catching impact, Flying Colors® Red (‘Diastonia’) boasts clouds of luscious blooms in an intense raspberry pink with ruby throats.

A close up horizontal image of Flying Colors Red diascia flowers growing in the garden.A close up horizontal image of Flying Colors Red diascia flowers growing in the garden.

These heat tolerant plants grow up to 12 inches tall with a spread of 20 inches and make a bold choice for baskets, beds, patio pots, rockeries, and butterfly gardens.

For fall flowers, shear lightly in midsummer when flowers slow and stems become a bit leggy.

Piccadilly Denim Blue

Welcoming as a comfy pair of jeans, Picadilly™ Denim Blue (‘Kledb06039’) offers cushions of mauvy denim blue blooms accented with magenta throats.

A close up horizontal image of light purple Piccadilly Denim Blue growing in the garden.A close up horizontal image of light purple Piccadilly Denim Blue growing in the garden.

The compact plants have a height and spread of up to 12 inches and thrive in cooler temperatures, adding soft color to hanging baskets, mixed beds, borders, window boxes, and containers.

Shear when leggy for an impressive fall rebloom.

Maintenance

To promote bushy, dense plants, pinch out the longest stems by half when they’re at least six inches in length.

To prolong their bloom time, deadhead by lightly shearing spent flowers regularly.

A close up horizontal image of the blades of a pair of scissors shearing flowering plants.A close up horizontal image of the blades of a pair of scissors shearing flowering plants.

For lightly shearing plants with delicate stems like diascia, I prefer to use scissors over garden snips, they do a much better job of cutting cleanly.

If flowering declines temporarily in summer’s heat, shear to reduce plants by about one-third to promote a full bloom when the air cools off in late summer.

Propagation

Direct sow seeds outdoors one to two weeks before the last frost date in your region or seeds can be started indoors six to eight weeks before planting out.

A close up horizontal image of pink and apricot diascia flowers growing in terra cotta pots pictured in bright sunshine.A close up horizontal image of pink and apricot diascia flowers growing in terra cotta pots pictured in bright sunshine.

Bedding plants are also available in most garden centers in spring.

When transplanting into prepared soil, mix in one tablespoon of bone meal and one tablespoon of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer such as 5-5-5 NPK to provide a steady supply of nutrients.

Water plants to settle in place and keep the soil lightly moist until they’re established.

40 Cauliflower Recipes You’ll Actually Want to Make

0

I’ve been firmly on team cauliflower since at least 2014. It’s easily one of the most versatile vegetables in my kitchen and something I cook with year-round.

Roasted cauliflower is still my favorite way to cook it. My Moroccan roasted cauliflower recipe, for example, tastes almost like popcorn once it’s done. I usually end up eating it straight off the pan before it even makes it to the table.

Even though I’m usually all about getting dinner on the table as fast as possible, cauliflower is one of the vegetables I’ll happily give a little extra time in the oven or air fryer because the flavor payoff is worth it. In this roundup, you’ll find 40 of my favorite cauliflower recipes including soups, salads, cauliflower rice dishes, tacos, casseroles, and simple roasted cauliflower sides.

Quick Tips for Cooking with Cauliflower

Over the years I’ve learned a few simple tricks that make cooking with cauliflower much easier:

  • Frozen cauliflower rice is usually the best option. It’s inexpensive, cooks quickly, and saves the hassle of breaking down a whole head of cauliflower.
  • Bagged cauliflower florets are a great shortcut. If you don’t love chopping a whole head of cauliflower, the pre-cut florets work perfectly in most recipes.
  • Frozen cauliflower florets work in many recipes. In about 80% of cases they roast and cook just as well as fresh. The main times I prefer fresh cauliflower are when presentation matters, like cauliflower wings or recipes where larger florets are important.

20 Unique Hedging Plants: Small, Medium, and Large Options

0

When people think of hedges, a few familiar plants usually come to mind—boxwood, arborvitae, maybe privet. But hedging plants can be far more diverse, offering not only privacy but also flowers, fragrance, seasonal color, and habitat for wildlife. By looking beyond the usual suspects, gardeners can create living boundaries that feel dynamic and distinctive rather than predictable.

From compact shrubs that form tidy low borders to medium-sized plants that add texture and bloom, and even larger species that can anchor a landscape with height and structure, there are many underused options that perform beautifully as hedges. The following selections highlight a range of plants organized by size, each bringing its own ornamental qualities and growing preferences while still delivering the structure and screening that hedges are meant to provide.

Are you inspired to add a new hedge to your garden? Here are some fun hedging plants for attractive, well-behaved species that go beyond the sometimes-invasive basics.

Short-Sized Hedging Plant Ideas

Low hedges can define spaces, edge pathways, and provide gentle screening without overwhelming a garden. While many gardeners default to clipped boxwood or dwarf evergreen shrubs, there are plenty of smaller plants that bring far more seasonal interest. The following selections stay relatively compact while offering flowers, fragrance, berries, or striking foliage—making them excellent choices for informal hedges or low-maintenance borders.

Medium-Sized Hedging Plant Ideas

Medium-height hedges strike a balance between privacy and openness. Tall enough to create a visual screen but still manageable in scale, these plants could work well along property lines, around patios, or as backdrops in mixed borders. Many of these options also provide multiple seasons of interest, from colorful stems and berries to unique foliage textures, adding beauty as well as function to the landscape.

Large-Sized Hedging Plant Ideas

For maximum screening and landscape impact, larger plants can form substantial hedges that function almost like living walls. Though some of these species naturally grow quite tall, they respond well to pruning and can be maintained as structured or informal hedges depending on your design. Beyond privacy, these plants offer strong architectural presence, seasonal color, or valuable habitat for wildlife, making them excellent long-term investments in the landscape.

Creamy Pesto Beans

0

These creamy pesto beans take just 20 minutes to make and are loaded with fiber and plant-based protein thanks to a creamy sauce made with silken tofu.

creamy pesto beans in a skillet garnished with fresh basil.

If you’re looking to increase your fiber intake, one of the easiest ways to do that is to eat more beans! Just 1/2 cup of beans provides 7-8 grams of fiber which is nearly a quarter of the recommended fiber you need for the whole day. What’s more, they are also a good source of protein and loaded with a variety of other essential nutrients like iron, magnesium, zinc, and folate.

Even better, beans are super easy to make! These creamy pesto beans take just 20 minutes to make and are so creamy and satisfying–you’ll be making this one on repeat for sure.

We Love these Pesto Beans Because

  • They’re ready in less than 30 minutes
  • They’re packed with filling protein and fiber
  • Vegan and gluten free

Key Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Vegan Pesto: my go-to store-bought vegan pesto is Gotham Greens. It’s refrigerated so you’ll usually find it in with the salad kits and dressings at the store. Hands-down the best flavor! Of course, you can also make your own vegan pesto for this. If you’re going with homemade, be sure to check out my vegan pesto recipe.
  • Beans: I used white beans for this recipe, but it also works great with butter beans or chickpeas too.
  • Silken tofu: in past, I’ve often used coconut milk to add creaminess to vegan recipes like this one but thought I would give blended silken tofu a try and I have become its biggest fan! Just give the tofu a quick blend in a small blender with the other sauce ingredients and it creates a creamy sauce that also boosts the protein tally in this finished dish.

Making these Pesto Beans Couldn’t be Easier

Blend the Tofu: Add the tofu, broth, nutritional yeast, lemon juice, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder to a blender and puree until smooth. I like using my Nutribullet for this rather than my full size countertop blender.

Simmer the Sauce and Beans: Add the beans and sauce to a skillet and bring to a simmer over medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Stir in the vegan pesto and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Turn off the heat and garnish with fresh basil to serve!

What to Serve with Pesto Beans

Honestly, my favorite way to eat these is to scoop up big bites with a piece of toasted sourdough bread. You can also serve this up over some cooked pasta. To round out the meal, you can add some oven roasted carrots or a simple salad like this pear arugula salad.

14 DIY Brooder Box Ideas to Raise Chicks

0

Raising chickens can be expensive, especially if you’re particular about the breeds you want. That’s why many chicken growers choose to start with chicks instead of buying adult hens.

Not only is it more affordable, but it also lets you build your flock the way you like. And honestly, there’s something really enjoyable about watching those tiny fluffy chicks slowly grow into full-grown chickens.

That said, baby chicks need a little extra care in the beginning. They can’t keep themselves warm yet, which is why a brooder box is so important.

It gives them the warmth and safe space they need to eat, drink, rest, and grow strong during their first few weeks.

Depending on your needs, you can easily build a chicken brooder box using simple materials you may already have at home, such as a cardboard box, plastic storage bin, wooden crate, or even an old tub.

Below are a few simple DIY brooder box ideas you can easily try at home.

14 DIY Chicken Brooder Box Ideas

When setting up a brooder box for baby chicks, the main things to focus on are warmth, safety, and enough space.

Chicks need a good heat source to stay warm, along with fresh air so the brooder doesn’t get stuffy.

It should also have soft bedding, easy access to food and water, and walls high enough so the chicks can’t escape.

1. Cardboard Box Brooder

A sturdy cardboard box can easily be turned into a simple brooder for baby chicks.

  • Just pick a large box with sides tall enough so the chicks can’t jump out.
  • Line the bottom with pine shavings or other safe bedding. Then place a chick feeder and waterer inside.
  • Hang a heat lamp above one side of the box so the chicks can move closer when they feel cold and step away if they get too warm.

If needed, you can place a piece of wire mesh over the top to keep the chicks safe.

2. Plastic Storage Bin Brooder

A large plastic storage bin can easily be turned into a brooder for baby chicks. Choose a bin that is deep enough so the chicks can’t jump out as they grow.

Spread a layer of pine shavings or other safe bedding at the bottom. Place a chick feeder and waterer inside, and hang a heat lamp above one side of the bin.

Some people also cut a section on the lid and cover it with wire mesh to improve airflow.

3. Large Storage Tote Brooder

You can easily turn a large storage tote into a brooder for baby chicks. Choose a sturdy tote with high sides so the chicks can’t jump out as they grow.

Add a thick layer of pine shavings or other safe bedding at the bottom.

Place a chick feeder and waterer inside, and position a heat lamp above one side of the tote so the chicks can move closer or farther away from the heat as needed.

If the tote has a lid, you can cut a section and cover it with wire mesh to allow better airflow.

4. Wooden Crate Brooder

If you have an old wooden crate, it can make a simple brooder for baby chicks. Start by lining the bottom with cardboard or a tray so the bedding doesn’t fall through the gaps.

Add a layer of pine shavings, then place a chick feeder and waterer inside. Position a heat lamp safely above one side of the crate to provide warmth.

If the crate has wide openings, you can attach some wire mesh around the sides to keep the chicks safely inside.

5. Old Dresser Drawer Brooder

An unused dresser drawer can also work as a small brooder box. Just clean the drawer well and line the bottom with pine shavings or other safe bedding.

Place a small feeder and waterer inside, and hang a heat lamp above one side of the drawer.

Since drawers already have solid sides, they help keep the chicks contained and protected during their early weeks.

6. Plastic Kiddie Pool Brooder

A plastic kiddie pool can make a roomy brooder for baby chicks. Just place the pool in a safe indoor area and spread a thick layer of pine shavings on the bottom.

Add a chick feeder and waterer, and hang a heat lamp above one side of the pool.

Many backyard chicken keepers use this setup because the round shape gives chicks plenty of space to move around as they grow.

7. Dog Crate Brooder

You can also turn a dog crate into a brooder with a few simple changes. Line the bottom with cardboard or a plastic tray first, then add bedding like pine shavings.

Place the feeder and waterer inside, and set up a heat lamp above the crate. The wire sides allow good airflow, which helps keep the brooder fresh and comfortable for the chicks.

8. Wire Storage Cube Brooder

Wire storage cubes can be connected to create a flexible brooder space. Arrange the panels in a square or rectangle and secure them with zip ties.

Line the floor with cardboard or a plastic sheet before adding bedding. This type of brooder is popular because you can easily adjust the size as your chicks grow.

9. Large Plastic Tub Brooder

A large plastic tub can also be used as a simple brooder for baby chicks. Choose a tub that is deep enough to keep the chicks from jumping out.

Spread a layer of pine shavings at the bottom, then place a feeder and waterer inside.

Position a heat lamp above one side of the tub so the chicks can move closer to the warmth when needed. Plastic tubs are easy to clean and work well for small groups of chicks.

10. Plywood Brooder Box

If you want something a bit more sturdy, you can build a simple brooder box using plywood.

Cut a few plywood panels and join them to make a shallow box with high sides.

Add bedding, a feeder, and a waterer inside, and hang a heat lamp above one side. This type of brooder is reusable and can last through many batches of chicks.

11. Stock Tank Brooder

You can also use a metal or plastic stock tank as a brooder for baby chicks. These tanks are often used on farms for watering animals, but they work surprisingly well for brooding too.

Just place the tank in a sheltered indoor area and spread a thick layer of pine shavings at the bottom.

Add a chick feeder and waterer, and hang a heat lamp safely above one side. The deep, sturdy sides help keep chicks contained while giving them plenty of room to move around comfortably.

12. Old Baby Playpen Brooder

An old baby playpen can easily be turned into a brooder for chicks. Many backyard chicken keepers repurpose playpens because they already have mesh sides for airflow and enough space for growing chicks.

Start by placing cardboard or a plastic sheet on the floor of the playpen to hold the bedding. Add pine shavings, then place a feeder and waterer inside.

Position a heat lamp above one side of the setup so chicks can stay warm while still having room to move away from the heat if needed.

13. Galvanized Water Trough Brooder

A galvanized water trough can also be used as a sturdy brooder for baby chicks. These metal troughs are often used on farms for feeding or watering animals, but they work well for brooding too.

  • Start by placing the trough in a safe indoor spot away from drafts. Add a thick layer of pine shavings at the bottom for soft bedding.
  • Then place a chick feeder and waterer inside, and hang a heat lamp securely above one side.
  • The tall metal sides help keep chicks safely contained while giving them plenty of room to move around.

14. Large Cardboard Appliance Box Brooder

A large cardboard box from appliances like refrigerators or washing machines can easily be turned into a brooder.

These boxes are usually strong and spacious, which makes them great for raising several chicks at once.

Simply place the box in a dry indoor area and line the bottom with pine shavings or other safe bedding.

Add a feeder and waterer, and hang a heat lamp above one side of the box. If needed, you can cut small openings near the top and cover them with mesh to improve airflow.

How Long Do Chicks Need a Brooder?

Baby chicks usually need a brooder for about 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, they rely on an external heat source because they cannot regulate their body temperature on their own.

As the weeks pass, chicks slowly grow feathers and become better at staying warm without extra heat.

In the first week, the brooder temperature should be around 95°F. After that, you can lower the temperature by about 5°F each week until the chicks are fully feathered.

Once they have enough feathers and the outside temperature is warm enough, they can safely move from the brooder to the coop.

Conclusion

Setting up a brooder box doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. As you’ve seen, many everyday household items can be easily turned into a safe and comfortable space for baby chicks.

The most important thing is to provide enough warmth, clean bedding, proper ventilation, and easy access to food and water.

With the right setup, your chicks will stay healthy and grow quickly during their first few weeks. Once they are fully feathered and strong enough, they’ll be ready to move out of the brooder and into their coop.
