In the past 25 years, the U.S. has seen more than 800,000 deaths from gun violence, and another 2 million or more injuries. A new report offers a roadmap to reduce the human toll of this crisis by 2040.
Sixty leading experts from a range of fields, including medicine, public health, criminology, law and the technology sector, convened earlier this year to create an action plan to address the problem. The report was published in JAMA on Monday.
“For too long, I think we’ve treated this as inevitable,” says Dr. Joseph Sakran, a co-author of the study, trauma surgeon and executive vice chair of surgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Gun violence is now the leading cause of death in children and teens, although the vast majority of firearm deaths are among adults. And nearly 60% of all deaths from firearm injuries are suicides.
“We do have a body of science that can inform and reduce the burden of injuries from firearm violence,” says Dr. Sandro Galea, dean of the school of public health at Washington University in St Louis, and study co-author.
“For example, through laws that make sure that there is appropriate screening, that guns do not fall in the hands of people who have a history of violence.”
The authors support alternatives to the typical approach to addressing firearm violence, which has been through the criminal justice system.
“We are not saying we don’t need any arrest or any incarceration,” says study co-author Daniel Webster, a professor at the Center for Gun Violence Solutions at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “That’s still necessary for public safety purposes. But you need to invest in programs that prevent violence.”
The roadmap outlined by the study includes taking a community-wide approach to prevention by addressing socioeconomic inequalities.
“Firearm harm is a symptom of deeper structural issues when you think about poverty and segregation and trauma and lack of opportunity,” says Sakran, who is himself a survivor of gun violence. When he was 17 years old, he was critically injured at a shooting after a high school football game.
Studies show that addressing those “upstream” factors can prevent gun violence, says Sakran.
“Things like housing stability, having a strong educational system, a pathway for jobs, access to health care, which are as essential to violence prevention as maybe perhaps any other law enforcement strategy,” he adds.
One such community violence intervention in Chicago, called Create Real Economic Destiny, uses community organizations to identify the individuals most at risk of being involved in violent crime and recruit them to receive supports such as mental health care, mentorship, education and job training.
A 2023 study found that alumni of this program had a 73% lower chance of being involved in a violent crime in the following two years.
Webster and his colleagues have found that a similar program in Baltimore, called Safe Streets, led to a 32% reduction in homicides and a 23% reduction in non-fatal shootings.
State gun laws also make a difference, says Webster. For example, a recent study in JAMA Pediatricsshowed that states with more restrictive gun laws have fewer pediatric deaths from firearms.
Webster and his colleagues have shown that firearm licensing laws “can reduce firearm homicide roughly 30% or possibly more. “And similar effects on reducing firearm suicide,” he says.
Overall, the report calls for a multi-pronged approach to prevention.
“In America, the burden [of addressing gun violence] has often been placed on the shoulders of a few people,” says Sakran. “What this report is talking about is the collective action that is so critical in order to move the needle forward.”
He’s also heat and cold tolerant, and moderately slow growing – expect a height and spread of about 15 feet at maturity. Plus, this variety is extremely resistant to pests and diseases.
Nature Hills Nursery carries this perennial favorite. Two- to three-foot tall plants are available in #2 containers.
4. Fireglow
Warn the neighbors when you plant ‘Fireglow’ because they might want to call the fire department when they see the sun shining through the vibrant leaves of this tree, which sets the landscape ablaze with a glowing three-season display.
In the spring, the leaves emerge with a striking, bold, and bright ruby color.
These transition to maroon in the summer, though they’ll develop an orange hue on the back in direct sun. Come autumn they’ll change again, this time to a fiery red with hints of orange.
The heavily lobed, palmate leaves may look delicate, but ‘Fireglow’ is known for being tough enough to withstand direct sun even in hot climates.
‘Garnet’ is a weeping ruby-colored A. palmatum var. dissectum – aka weeping Japanese maple – that lives up to its name.
It starts the season with deep maroon foliage before gradually transitioning to bright, deep garnet in the fall. It stays extremely compact at five feet tall and wide, with a natural umbrella-like form.
Like the changing colors in the sky just before dusk, A. palmatum ‘Oregon Sunset’ gradually transitions through various colors through the growing season.
The rounded, palmate leaves start out bright red before changing to plum purple in the summer. When fall arrives, they shift to orange-red.
This slow grower is perfect in containers or a small garden plot. It only reaches seven feet tall in 20 years, but will eventually reach 10 feet tall and wide in ideal conditions with time.
If you live somewhere with hot summers, plan to give this cultivar a little protection from the afternoon heat.
If you’re ready to sit back and enjoy a three-season sunset in your garden, grab a potted specimen at Maple Ridge Nursery.
7. Pévé Starfish
If you want something a little different to stand out from the laceleafs and the typical palmates of the Japanese maple world, check out ‘Pévé Starfish.’
Photo credit: JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State University.
Well-known Dutch breeder Piet Vergeldt introduced this unusual A. palmatum, which has backward-cupped leaves that distinctly resemble red starfish.
The foliage is bright crimson in the spring, maroon in the summer, and even brighter crimson in the fall, and trees stay under eight feet tall.
A. palmatum var. dissectum ‘Red Dragon’ is an elegant weeping tree that stays small, reaching just four feet in height in about 10 years.
But while its fernlike, thin, heavily serrated, scarlet leaves are gorgeous, what makes this tree so highly sought after is its ability to hold its color all summer – even when it’s extremely hot and other maples are fading.
‘Red Dragon’ doesn’t need the heat to look its best, though. It will retain its crimson hue even in partial shade.
They emerge deep purple in the spring, but by fall the leaves turn a bold, vibrant red.
Combined with a gracefully arching growth habit, ‘Red Select’ makes for an elegant centerpiece or accent in your outdoor space.
This plant was cultivated from the ever-popular ‘Inaba Shidare’ and they look fairly similar, though ‘Red Select’ features smaller leaves. It reaches 10 feet tall and 15 feet wide at maturity.
Some Acer plants are sensitive to pollution, but not ‘Red Select.’
This A. palmatum var. dissectum cultivar has palm-shaped leaves and the young branches are red, gradually fading to gray as they mature.
Ready to select this beaut for your garden? Nab one at Fast Growing Trees. They carry this classic option in a one- to two-foot height.
10. Tamukeyama
Chances are there’s a ‘Tamukeyama’ growing in a garden near you. That’s because it’s been available to gardeners for over 300 years and it ticks all the right boxes.
It’s a vigorous grower, tolerant of heat, leafs out later in the spring to avoid late frost damage, and it holds its color well all summer long.
The cascading, umbrella-like shape requires little pruning to maintain, and the deeply lobed, heavily serrated leaves look like petite crimson ferns.
The color starts out plum and stays that way throughout the summer before shifting to vibrant crimson in the fall.
Nature Hills Nursery carries this classic in #2 nursery pots, or in #10 containers so you can get a jump on the growing process.
11. Twombly’s Red Sentinel
Ken Twombly of Twombly’s Nursery in Connecticut spotted an unusual growth on a Japanese maple at a church one day.
Recognizing a good thing when he saw it, he propagated the cutting and the result is a stunner that is unparalleled in the Japanese maple world.
This tree is upright and extremely narrow with a three-foot width and a 10-foot height when mature. Position these in a row or as a single bright scarlet sentry in the garden.
The leaves are palmate with seven lobes that feature finely serrated edges. Purplish-red during the summer, they brighten up to a bold, bright vermillion in the fall.
When it comes to Japanese maples, red means go! Pop on over to your nearest nursery either online or in person, and scoop one up to add bold, bright color to your outdoor space.

Chai tea is one of my favorites this time of year and I love incorporating chai spices into baked goods. The aroma of cinnamon, clove, and cardamom warming the kitchen feels like a cozy hug. These adaptogenic chai spice protein balls capture that same cozy flavor with the benefit of adaptogens.
They’re slightly sweet, warmly spiced, and have a soft, chewy texture that makes them feel indulgent, even though they’re packed with nutrients. Each protein ball is full of ingredients that help support energy, focus, and immune health. Especially helpful during the colder (often chaotic) months when our bodies could use an extra boost.
These are great to make ahead for snacks and they also freeze well for later. The protein balls provide healthy fats, protein, and adaptogens to help your body handle stress more effectively. Added collagen also supports gut health, healthier skin, and stronger hair and nails.
Warming Chai Spices
Cinnamon, clove, cardamom, and ginger aren’t just tasty, they offer powerful immune system support. Cinnamon helps balance blood sugar and adds natural sweetness without needing much added sugar. Clove is rich in antioxidants and antimicrobial to help support cellular health.
Cardamom is both soothing and invigorating, known for its ability to calm digestion while boosting circulation. And ginger brings its signature gentle heat and anti-inflammatory benefits, helping support immune and digestive health.
Together, these cozy chai spices add a delicious flavor and powerful health benefits! While I’ve included the spices separately in the recipe, you can also use 2 and ½ teaspoons of my homemade pumpkin pie spice blend. The flavor is similar, and it’s easy to use if you already have some mixed up.
Mighty Adaptogens
Adaptogens are plants and mushrooms that help the body be more resilient to stressors. Whether its physical, emotional, or environmental. Unlike potent medicines, they help bolster the body’s cellular health and defenses to restore balance.
There are several different true adaptogens, and some work better for different situations. I opted to use a functional mushroom blend here because it helps provide broader support than just choosing one thing.
Adaptogenic mushrooms help support focus, sleep, energy, and calm, depending on which combination you choose. I like the adaptogenic mushroom blends from Four Sigmatic, which often include varieties like reishi, lion’s mane, and cordyceps.
Reishiis sometimes referred to as the “queen of mushrooms” for its calming properties. It helps with restful sleep and supports the immune system.
Lion’s Mane supports mental clarity and focus. Perfect for that mid-afternoon slump.
Cordycepshelps boost stamina and energy naturally without caffeine.
Whatever blend you go with, be sure to choose a quality blend that isn’t overly earthy or bitter so the flavor balances well with chai spices.
More Healthy Ingredients (and Substitutions)
Collagen is one of my favorite additions to stir into drinks or even baked goods. It’s an easy way to add clean protein that supports gut health, joint health, and vibrant skin. Since collagen is flavorless, it blends seamlessly with the almond butter and spices.
Almond butter (or cashew butter) adds a nutty richness and healthy fats that help keep you full. They also make the protein balls perfectly soft and chewy. If you’re avoiding nuts, sunflower seed butter also works. I don’t recommend peanut butter here, since its strong flavor tends to overpower the delicate chai spices.
Hemp seeds add a pleasant crunch and an extra boost of omega-3s, plus a complete amino acid profile. They’re great for energy, muscle recovery, and healthy hair and skin. Honey helps bind the ingredients together and adds a touch of sweetness, plus enzymes and minerals. If you prefer, pure maple syrup works just as well.
How to Enjoy Them
These chai spice protein balls are wonderful as a quick snack for an afternoon energy boost, or even post-workout. They keep well in the fridge for about a week, and you can easily double the recipe to freeze for later.
It feels like you’re eating dessert, but they’re full of nourishing ingredients. Warming, grounding, and just a little sweet. These are a great go-to snack for supporting focus and calm while keeping your immune system strong through the changing seasons.
Chai Spice Protein Balls
These tasty, bite sized protein balls are naturally sweetened with honey and feature chai flavors. Plus, they contain functional mushrooms for better focus, sleep, and more.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Add all of the ingredients to the bowl of a stand mixer. Start with 1 teaspoon of coconut flour to thicken, and increase if needed. You can also use a hand mixer.
Mix thoroughly, taste, and adjust spices if desired.
Use a Tablespoon to scoop out the mixture and roll it into balls. Roll the balls into the hemp seeds.
Place the rolled balls onto the parchment paper and store in the fridge.

Coconut flour helps thicken the dough, but don’t overdo it! Too much and it will get crumbly.
Opt for a mushroom powder that has a mild taste. Start with 1 teaspoon and gradually increase to 3 teaspoons if you’re unsure how strong the taste will be.

Are you ready for more summer color? That’s exactly what we’ll see as we head back to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to enjoy more creative containers made by Leslie Ornelas. If you missed it yesterday, check out Part 1 so you don’t miss out on the designs that we have already shared. Otherwise, enjoy this second batch of incredible containers.
Gardening in Colorado is always a challenge, dealing with late/early freezes, desiccating winds, semi-arid conditions, and the dreaded H-word—HAIL. Yet gardeners are a hearty and stubborn ilk, not easily dissuaded from our passion for growing and immersing ourselves in nature.
Container planting is a favorite creative outlet of mine, given the flexibility of growing a vast variety of plants in ever-changing combinations. Especially exciting is experimenting with new designs each year, as well as repeating successful mixes.
Over the years, foliage has become the foundation of most plantings. Flowers are always enchanting, yet interesting foliage plants, especially coleus, ensure consistent beauty throughout the season. Along with grasses, which fare well through bouts of hail, perennials such as hostas and heucheras are great container choices.
Yesterday we saw a lot of stand-alone pots and container groupings, but this photo shows that Leslie also adds container magic to her planted beds. This bright blend adds a bit of warmth to an otherwise cool-toned planting.
As we saw yesterday, Leslie has a real eye for fabulous foliage combinations that don’t need flowers but only get better with the addition of blooms. Happy Days™ Purple dahlia (Dahlia ‘HDPU165’, Zones 8–11 or as an annual) has black foliage that really makes it shine.
Leslie is able to add even more plants to her space with planters that hang from fences and walls. This small blue planter is particularly eye-catching with a chartreuse creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia, Zones 4–8), blue lobelia, and a bright pink calibrachoa.
Now that’s what I call a spiller! This sweet potato vine (Ipomoea batatas, Zones 9–11 or as an annual) is so long and lush that it can be hard to tell at first glance where the plant begins or ends. What an effective illusion, if you enjoy the look of a vine climbing up a tree but want to avoid potential damage.
Check out this amazing focal point pot! The plumes of the purple fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum’, Zone 9–10 or as an annual) are glowing in the fading sunlight while a multicolored Joseph’s coat (Amaranthus tricolor, annual) is a kaleidoscope of color shooting up through the center.
If you find interest in foliage, there is a whole world to experiment with once you turn your eye to succulents. The choice of a bright green sedum here gave this pot some crazy cool hair.
This is a stunning fire-and-ice combination. Orange-red zinnia is a fantastic contrast to ‘Silver Swirl’ dusty miller (Centaurea ragusina ‘Balcentsirl’, Zone 6–9), while a rainbow dracaena (Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia ‘Tricolor’, Zone 10–12 or as an annual) unites the two.
And it looks like Leslie’s pup also enjoys her container plantings! On a sunny day, the space under her sprawling designs becomes the perfect spot to enjoy some shade.
Thank you so much for sharing this lovely array of containers with us, Leslie! Your creativity is absolutely boundless, and they are an inspiration to anyone looking to experiment more in their plantings. I hope that we get lots more updates from your garden.

If you’ve googled “weight loss,” there’s a good chance that one of the first search results that came up was a website for Ozempic.
But Ozempic hasn’t been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for weight loss — it’s only approved to treat Type 2 diabetes. So why is it showing up there?
The answer is something called a sponsored search result. Companies pay search engines so that their websites are among the first results you see, if you enter certain keywords or phrases.
“Pharmaceutical companies have figured out how to game that system with pay-per-click ads, which are essentially their way of buying their way to the top of search results,” he added.
Normally, drug companies have to follow strict rules when it comes to advertising their products in magazines or television commercials.
They have to do things like disclose risks or side effects of the drug, and they can’t advertise a drug to treat a condition it hasn’t been FDA-approved to treat, even if doctors may sometimes prescribe that drug “off label,” to treat other conditions.
If they do, the companies can get in trouble with the FDA. The idea is to prevent ads containing false or misleading material that can potentially hurt someone.
But online sponsored search results, which usually appear on top of other results, aren’t regulated the way TV ads are. The law hasn’t caught up to the changing technology.
Eisenkraft Klein and his colleagues looked at two years of paid search results for Ozempic sponsored by the drug’s maker, Novo Nordisk.
They found that 11 percent of the search keywords or phrases the company paid for contained the word ‘weight’ even though Ozempic isn’t approved for weight loss.
They also found that Novo Nordisk paid for search results even when the keywords referred to the drug’s main competitors, such as Trulicity and Mounjaro, manufactured by Eli Lilly.
“Novo Nordisk sponsored the search term ‘Kelly Clarkson weight loss’, presumably because those searching for celebrities and weight loss might be interested in their product,” Eisenkraft Klein says.
The researchers focused only on Ozempic for their study, and more research is needed to look into sponsored results for other drugs and therapeutics, he says.
Still, Eisenkraft Klein says the study can be a lesson for consumers: “Don’t assume that Google is showing you the most relevant information. Just because it’s first doesn’t mean it’s the most objective, or the most relevant.”
He recommended scrolling past the sponsored search results and looking for independent sources, such as academic medical centers, when doing medication research online.
Contacted by NPR for comment, Novo Nordisk spokeswoman Liz Skrbkova said in an email the study misrepresents the company’s “paid search approach,” which she says uses “industry-standard” capabilities to reach consumers.
Novo Nordisk is in compliance with U.S. laws and regulations, she added, as well as its own ethical standards, “so that patients can find information about our medicines to make shared decisions with their healthcare professionals about their care.”
The United States is one of the only countries that allows direct-to-consumer advertising for prescription drugs.
The Trump administration signed a memo calling on the FDA to crack down on prescription drug advertising in September, saying companies had been lax about disclosing risks.
The FDA is committed to making sure that promotional communications for prescription drugs are “truthful, balanced and accurately communicated,” according to an email from Emily Hilliard, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services, the parent agency for the FDA. She also encouraged people to report concerns to the agency’s Bad Ad Program.
A Google spokesman, Nate Funkhouser, said in a statement to NPR that it has clear policies for advertising prescription drugs: “Advertisers are fully responsible for ensuring their advertising strategy, including all keywords and content, adheres to regulatory requirements.”
